Why did I choose this university?

‘I’m a guy from Punjab, India - the state of five rivers carrying roots of agriculture in soul (we are farmers since ages). I am studying a Diploma of Engineering at Griffith College leading to a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering at Griffith University which will be commencing in July. As being agriculturally-based I always wanted to do something based on environment. My aim is to open a milk production sustainable plant to work on sustainable agriculture and to be a part of community education for sustainable lifestyle and development. So I decided to study environmental engineering to learn basics like solid waste water waste management etc. Brisbane was always my first choice as it is Australia’s new world city with a lot of opportunities. Griffith is famous for [studies about the] environment so I enrolled in its pathway, Griffith College to make my basics strong and clear. As a pathway to Griffith, Griffith College has helped me a lot to achieve what I am here for.’

My first week

"‘As being a new student to Griffith College (actually new to Australia as well) my first week was very exciting but I was very nervous as well. Australia is a totally different country from India. Both countries as very culturally and socially different. First week at Griffith College was very exciting as it all starts with orientation which lasts for 2 days where one gets opportunity to meet all new students and old students as well who work as mentors. It gives a very healthy feeling and confidence to all the newcomers. Being a newcomer, it is difficult to adjust in starting with studies and the curriculum is very different here. But Griffith College advisors helped a lot by giving personal time to me and were in touch until I got to the normal curriculum.’"

My campus

‘I have studied at both Griffith College campuses, Goldcoast and Mt. Gravatt. Mainly I have completed my course at Mt. Gravatt campus. It is a great campus with a lot of facilities. As the campus is in Griffith University itself a Griffith College student has all Griffith University facilities. It has got amazing infrastructure especially the community hall near the library, the place where everyone hangs out together. It has got an amazing café, Griffith co-op shop and pool tables. The other awesome place is M28; it is a great café/bar and the coolest place. Some other amazing facilities include the 24/7 computer lab and the quiet study zone in M14. The aquatic center is good too as one can learn to swim there. The university itself has got a major bus station so transportation is very feasible; it’s just 5 minutes to a major shopping complex.’

My city

‘I live in Brisbane. It is a big city and the capital city of Queensland State. I love this place. People are really nice and cool here. The city is just 200 years old with a lot of significant figures and major historical places. Brisbane City Hall is the most important place in city. It is a historical building which was the most beautiful building of Australia at a time. The tower clock is a replica of Big Ben in London. Brisbane is settled near to the Brisbane River. Story Bridge gives the best view of the city. The other place is Kurilpa Bridge; many people don’t know about it but it won World Transport Building of the Year in 2011. Many other places a must visit Brisbane include the treasury casino, the South Bank and Roma Street parklands. I personally believe that I live in the best city with an awesome environment and so many places one can hang out.’

My study space

‘Usually I am at campus from Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Being an engineering student I have got classes 5 days a week. Usually it’s lab till 1pm and classes later on. The classes are fully equipped with charging spots just under the seats (everyone needs a charging spot nowadays especially in classes). The computer labs have got all the software and technology which we need in our individual departments to study. Outside of class, I usually prefer to sit at state library in city. The university library is my other study place where at level 1 we have group study zones, while level 2 and 3 are quiet study zones. One can hire a room for private study sessions. The Griffith College staff help a lot and give enormous help in consultation times.’

My social life

‘I always prefer to work with Griffith College and the University for any volunteer work. It was a good experience to work with Griffith College as a mentor, ambassador and in photo and video shoots. Griffith College has given me many opportunities to expand myself as an individual and socialize. Now I work as an International Student ambassador for Brisbane City Council. All these activities and volunteer work have helped me in making a lot of friends and settling down in a culturally diverse city like Brisbane. I love to hang out at South Bank’s artificial beach; it is an amazing place – a beach in the city! As a part of Griffith College I have made a lot of friends with different nationalities. The other place I love is Hamilton Harbor. You can eat at street markets which are open on Friday and Saturday night at the harbor. Brisbane’s social life is very happening – it is a happening city. One has always got something to do.’

My home

‘I live off campus near Chermside, a suburb in north Brisbane. The place is a bit far from the University but the transportation is just walking distance from my apartment. It is just a minute walk to the bus station, aquatic center and shopping complex. I live in an apartment on the 3rd floor of a building. I share it with my friend. Separate rooms and bathrooms, open kitchen…that’s all a student wants. I love cooking. The pool, sauna and barbeque are in the building itself so usually all my friends hang out at my place. The view is amazing, you just need to sit in balcony and enjoy the evening. People in Brisbane are very friendly and once a month the floor mates party in the hall. The life is simply the best!’
