Hotcourses Overseas Education Counsellors participate in a Radio-show!
101.4 FM Rainbow is a popular FM radio station in Chennai and has a huge fan following across the state. On May 8, three of our experienced overseas education counsellors - Khushboo, Priyanka and Subha participated in a ‘LIVE’ radio-show on higher education abroad. The show aired from 3 PM to 4 PM and was hosted by eminent radio jockey Mr. Kosalram.
The show had around 15 callers telephoning the radio station and speaking to the counsellors with their queries about study abroad opportunities. The show aired a day after the announcement of the Higher Secondary Examination results. Hence a number of callers wanted to know about undergraduate degree programmes abroad, especially in engineering and bio-technology.
Transcripts of a couple of questions and answers:
Caller - Hi, this is Kamalakannan from Saidapet; I am interested in studying an engineering degree in the USA? What would this cost me?
Counsellor - Hi Kamalakannan, cost depends on what stream of engineering you aspire to study and the institution where you study! Top-ranked universities like MIT, Stanford and Harvard will definitely be quite expensive with the tuition fee estimated to be nearly US$45,000 and living, food and accommodation costs working out on an average to US$30,000. State universities like Iowa State University, University of Texas, Dixie State University, etc., offer programmes at a subsidised cost and most universities offer academic scholarships for international students. Caller - Hi, this is Priya calling from Mylapore, I have secured 1100 out of 1200 in my Class XII exams and want to study the BSc Microbiology programme. Please suggest some universities and countries that offer affordable UG courses in Microbiology.
Counsellor - Hi Priya, firstly congrats on getting an excellent score in your board exams. Undergraduate programmes in Microbiology are offered by most leading universities across the world. In the UK, the University of Birmingham is renowned for its BSc(Hons) in Microbiology degree. The University of York, University of Surrey and the University of Liverpool also offer this programme. The National University of Singapore (NUS) offers a very popular BSc in Microbiology degree; the course costs around Rs. 24 lakhs for very year of study. In the USA most universities offer a programme in Microbiology with additional concentrations in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, and Biosciences. In the USA the undergraduate degree is a four year programme, hence the cost burden is more. On an average, every year of study will cost around Rs. 20 lakhs.
