Overview

Freie Universitat Berlin is known as the Free University of Berlin in English and popularly known as FU Berlin. The University traces its origins to the tough times after the Second World War when there was a need for a free and independent university in Berlin. Classes started in 1948 in the buildings of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for Science. The University grew with various buildings in the residential areas of Berlin and today is a popular reminder of the spirit of the quest for knowledge among students. Admissions are quite tough and only the best of the best get into FU Berlin as there is a massive applicant list for limited places. The University comprises 12 distinct departments and three inter-disciplinary central institutes. FU Berlin has academic partnerships with leading universities in the USA, the UK, Japan and South Korea to facilitate student exchange programmes and study abroad trips. The University has a diverse international student community with a small chunk of students from Asian countries.
