This programme is accredited by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), United Kingdom, beginning 2002. At present, the University of Malaya programme is the only one outside the British Isles (United Kingdom and Ireland) to receive such recognition. Technological advances and developments in medicine, particularly in radiology, oncology (radiotherapy) and nuclear medicine, have created a demand for qualified medical physicists to manage and monitor the medical usage of radiation in all its forms.
