What will I learn?

BA (Hons) Graphic Design supports students seeking a specialist design focus, those interested in hybrid forms of communication as well as those wanting a comprehensive graphic communication design education. The graphic design programme is informed by industry and is focused on nurturing an understanding of an evolving creative practice that identifies desired meanings, behaviours and experiences for the end user, consumer, or audience allowing the outcome, or form of communication to emerge through active engagement, experimentation, and feedback.You’ll be encouraged to ideate, collaborate, experiment and ask purposeful questions while working on a range of projects including digital, informational, motion graphics, typographic, branding, signage and way-finding, social, speculative, and many applications of graphic design in its broadest sense. Iterative inquiry led creative practice frames our projects as platforms for testing ideas and spotting opportunities.What you will learnThrough studio-based collaboration you’ll build key design skills and a core understanding of graphic design practice. You’ll discover your own approach to visual problem solving and graduate with the technical, critical, and conceptual skills, highly prized by industry. You’ll engage with leading design companies who set ‘live’ briefs, give talks, run workshops and help us to develop the curriculum. Our aim is to inspire future designers to become responsible practitioners, to gain core conceptual and technical skills, to understand the huge potential for graphic design and to contribute to influencing and shaping the way people see and behave in the world.Typically 60% of your time will be contact hours, including set-project based learning, hands on workshops, ‘live’ industry and competition briefs, lectures, group critiques and tutorials, studio visits and exhibitions. 100% of assessment is coursework based.By the end of the course you will be able to...• Evidence comprehensive, practical and theoretical knowledge and an understanding of graphic design within relevant contexts• Identify defined aspects of the discipline and specialise within the field of graphic design• Work independently and apply knowledge, skills and understanding appropriately• Self and peer appraise to manage and reflect on learning• Evidence effective problem-solving, research, communication and presentation skills• Successfully realise visual, creative and aesthetic solutions• Be confident, informed and proactive• Pursue career opportunities and post graduate study
