Want to use your engineering skills for the greater good of saving the planet? Environmental engineering helps you go green big time!

Starting Point!

Typically, engineering students of all streams are welcomed into this field.  Generally for gaining admission into MS Environmental Engineering programs, it would be desirable if you have finished your bachelor’s in engineering in streams of chemical, mechanical, environmental, or even civil engineering.  On completion of your MS, you can continue and keep going for a PhD. This will give you the edge over the other students and make you more employable.

Areas of Study Within

The Environmental Engineering Program covers a broad spectrum of specialities such as hazardous substance control, environmental planning, and environmental engineering and science. Generally these courses are offered as intensive study units in a single area or as interrelated ones of areas you choose.
It will take you in depth through the engineering, biological, and physico-chemical aspects of water quality and pollution control, hazardous chemical treatment, groundwater remediation. There are also opportunities for specialization in pollutant transport and atmospheric chemistry for those with an interest in the reduction of automobile emission. Students can also opt for specialisation within topics related to fluid mechanics, earth sciences, environmental resources planning, impact assessment, and water resources planning.

Technically Speaking!

What the industry looks for in environmental engineers is beyond mere technical skills.  Unlike other engineering streams this field demands that you are able to communicate your ideas through to specialists outside of the engineering field so communication is key to your success. As an environmental engineer, you should also be detail oriented, creative, and analytical.

Indoors or Outdoors?

As an environmental engineer, you have scope to work within industrial plants, labs, and offices. If you prefer being outdoors, you can involve yourself directly with onsite issues and take care of direct operations and monitoring at construction sites.

The Role You Could Play!

As an environmental engineer, here are a few activities you would be expected to do.
  • You will be expected to collaborate with other environmental planners, scientists, engineers, and hazardous waste technicians.
  • You will have to perform inspections on municipal and industrial facilities to check whether they effectively and comply with regulations.
  • Performing of tasks such as preparation, review, and updating of environmental investigation reports.
  • Supervising and designing of processes such as remediation of air, water, and soil quality. Desalination plant design for ocean water without causing any harm to life forms in the ocean.
  • Effective wastewater treatment designs.
  • These are just some of the few things you could engage in, if you become an environmental engineer.

Big Bucks!

An environmental engineering program could help you become a qualified hydrologist, a sanitation engineer, and the list goes on!
Environmental engineers are seen to make around $79,000 annually (Source: Science buddies) which is almost double the times of the mean US wage which comes to around $45,000! True, money isn’t everything which is why you would be glad to know that this field will experience a growth rate of 21% or more within the 2010-2020 period!
