What is it that sets one educational institution apart from another?

  • Courses on offer
  • Location
  • Faculty
  • Campus-facilities
  • Employment services

The list can be pretty exhaustive and the various permutations and combinations can make it very tough for a student trying to short-list an institution, which offers a little bit of everything. Over the years the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings table has become the benchmark, which students and parents analyse to find the perfect institution.

About the Rankings:

The World Reputation Rankings are part of the portfolio of university ranking systems that have established Times Higher Education as the most respected and cited provider of comparative university performance data in the world. The reputation rankings are based on a global invitation-only opinion poll carried out by Ipsos MediaCT for Times Higher Education’s rankings data supplier, Thomson Reuters. The poll has attracted 48,000 responses from more than 150 countries in three years. The 2013 results are based on 16,639 responses from senior published academics.

These rankings play a major role in a student’s decision in choosing one university over another!

Reference: The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2013

Some highlights of the 2013 rankings:

  • The US and the UK continue to be at the top with Harvard University being the top-ranking university.
  • Australia is becoming the preferred destination of students and this reflects in the improved rankings of institutions, which featured in last year's list. Two Australian institutions entered the Top-100 list for the first time.
  • Brazil, Russia and China feature in the Top-100 list as well.
  • The rivalry between Cambridge and Oxford continues - Cambridge leads the race by a whisker!

Points to Ponder:

  • Asian institutions are making their presence felt. The National University of Singapore climbed one place to 22nd (it was 27th in 2011), while the Republic of Korea’s Seoul National University improved its standing, entering the Top-50 this year.
  • The UK has seven top 50 universities, which have generally maintained their prestigious reputations: Cambridge holds on to third, Oxford moved up two places to fourth, University College London moved up one place to 20th and the London School of Economics moved from 29th to 25th.
  • Although Oxford (now 4th) swapped places with Stanford (6th) this year, the Top -Six’s membership has remained consistent since the World Reputation Rankings’ first edition in 2011.
  • The gap between the leaders and the chasing pack is widening every year.
  • The US continues to dominate, with 43 universities in the world Top-100 list.
  • In terms of representation in the Top-100, the US and the UK are followed by Australia, which has moved ahead of Japan and the Netherlands and now has six representatives (up from four last year).
  • Japan, the Netherlands and Germany each feature five institutions in the Top-100 list. France has four representatives.
  • No Indian institution features in the Top-100 list!
When short-listing an institution try to cover the following important points - international recognition of the degree, scholarships offered, research facilities, part-time work options and post-study work options, cost of living and accommodation facilities.
