Most students planning to go abroad for higher studies have a mortal fear of the visa interview. It seems like an interrogation horror story from a badly made movie in their minds. This is completely wrong; the visa interview is a clear and documented process and the interviewing officer will ask questions based on your study options and university and your funds; and most importantly on what you wish to do on completing your programme! At Hotcourses India, our certified visa guidance experts conduct numerous mock-interviews to help you prepare for the big day at the Embassy Office.
Given below is a student – Manas Krishna’s experience at the U.S. Consulate office in Hyderabad.
Only my passbooks, loan sanction letter and passport were collected while I was standing in the line and submitted to the VO by one of the employees.
I stepped forward to the counter.
VO (Taking a seat): What is your year of graduation?
VO: What have you been doing ever since?
Me: I have been working as a *********
VO: Interesting.. So you know *************
Me: Yes, I have good knowledge of the subject. I have moved to Operations a year ago.
VO (Cuts me short): Yeah.. yeah.. that's okay.
VO (After taking a look at my passbooks): There's a big fund transfer (4 Lakhs) that has been made recently.
Me: We had loaned that amount to immediate relatives of ours because they needed it urgently. They have returned it within a week. I am sure.
VO (Again cuts me short): Yeah. Everybody says the same thing. Everybody is sure.
Me: The funds were always there sir.
VO (Not really interested): So who credited the amount back to your account?
Me (Named my relative)
VO: That is not the name mentioned here.
Me: (Named other family members)
VO: Okay.. Hmmm.. (Typing constantly)
VO: What does your father do?
Me: He is a retired government employee.
VO: State or central?
VO: Which department?
Me (While VO was typing): Sir, I have statements for 3 other bank accounts which I'm not carrying passbooks for. (Trying to hand them to him)
VO (refused): That's okay.
VO: Do you have any loans?
Me: I have a sanctioned loan for 25 lakh rupees from HDFC.
VO: How much?
Me: 25 lakhs
VO: What bank did you say again? Where is your loan sanction letter?
Me: You're holding it.
VO (Takes a look at the letter, gets up from his desk and walks away. Returns in a few seconds): I'm done with the interview. I don't have anything else to ask you. I'm going to give you this form (221g) and hold on to this letter and your passport. We will contact you soon. (Returned my passbooks and walked away again)
Me (After he returned): Do you want me to wait here or outside?
VO: You can go home. We will get in touch with you soon.
He did not enquire about my academics or ask for any other document. My bank manager received a call within half an hour from the consulate asking him to verify the credibility of the loan document, which he did. This is how my visa interview went!
Please note – Manas is slated to join the Masters in Information Systems programme at Northern Illinois University.
