Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) is one of the well-known and reputable private universities in Malaysia. The University was owned by an education foundation and funded through the generosity of benefactors, the community, sponsors, corporations and by the people. The vision of the University is to be a global university of educational excellence with transformative societal impact.
With the first intake of only 411 students in one campus location in June 2002, today the University’s enrolment has reached more than 26,000 students with campuses located in Bandar Sungai Long and Kampar, Perak.
UTAR has graduated over 38,000 students since its inaugural convocation in 2005. Among its alumni are successful entrepreneurs and leaders in multinational companies advancing rapidly in their careers.
The University currently offers more than 110 academic programmes in its nine faculties, four centres and three institutes. The programmes offered are from Foundation Study to Bachelor's, Master’s, and PhD degrees in the fields of Engineering and Built Environment, Information and Communication Technology, Life and Physical Sciences, Medicine and Health Sciences, Agriculture and Food Sciences, Actuarial Science, Mathematics and Process Management, Accounting, Business and Economics, Arts, Social Sciences and Education, and Creative Industries and Design.
The University is committed to promoting research and scholastic development in diverse fields through its Research, Development and Commercialisation (RDC) agenda which will advance its mission to becoming a premier university of teaching and research excellence. This is evident through the setting up of 27 research centres at the University and the establishment of the UTAR Global Research Network – a platform for UTAR faculty members to network for research purposes, with invited academics, researchers and technologists from all over the world. The UTAR Undergraduate Research Scheme (URS) was also initiated to allow UTAR undergraduates to systematically undergo a structured programme designed to expose and train them in various aspects of research project implementation.
The University has since established nine endowed professorial chairs to create a close collaboration with the industries in banking and finance, environmental engineering and green technology, creative industries, construction management, medicine, economics, civil engineering, agricultural science and chemistry.
To date, the university has established formal collaborations to facilitate international exchanges, research and training with over 190 institutions/organizations consisting foreign and local institutions of higher learning, and local and foreign industry partners.
