Established in 1833 by Georgia Baptists, Mercer University was initially a male preparatory school named Mercer Institute, comprising a red clay farm and two hewed log cabins. Today, Mercer University is a comprehensive center of professional education. The university is home to over 9,000 students and has 12 schools and colleges offering courses that cover the entire academic spectrum. Mercer University has campuses in Macon, Atlanta, Savannah, and Columbus and two regional academic centers in Georgia. There is also a university press, five teaching hospitals, an engineering research center in Warner Robins, a performing arts center in Macon, and an educational partnership with Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex. In 2018, Mercer University was reclassified as a doctoral university with high research activity and was ranked in the top tier of universities in the USA by U.S. News & World Report.
