GRE - The Path to Success:

The GRE is the preferred exam of choice for students aspiring to study a postgraduate engineering programme in the USA. Institutions have their own cut-off scores which look at a combination of the GRE score, IELTS/TOEFL score and the overall grade in the applicant’s undergraduate degree. Some universities also have an additional test that applicants may have to write before they are offered a place to study.

One point that applicants need to note is that ETS the company that administers the GRE does not offer any scholarships or financial awards to top-scorers in the GRE.

The United States – India Educational Foundation (USIEF) administers the Fulbright scholarship, which is a popular scholarship option among students from India. Leading universities like Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Stanford University, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Princeton University have their own scholarship schemes sponsored by endowments by companies, trusts and individuals.

Best GRE Scores:

If you score above >>> 160 in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections and 5 or more in the Analytical Writing section then it means you have really done well in your GRE. This is considered as an excellent score in the GRE.This GRE score in combination with your scores in the TOEFL/IELTS and your undergraduate degree will play a crucial role in determining if you will receive a scholarship or not. 

Deciding Factors:

You need to remember that a number of factors come into play when your scholarship application is examined. These are:

  1. The quality of the performance of other candidates who have applied for scholarships.
  2. The total number of scholarships available in that semester/year
  3. The general scoring trends in GRE and IELTS for that specific exam.
  4. The quality of your statement of purpose and the letters of recommendation that you submit.
  5. If you have worked on any research project in your undergraduate study; it definitely adds value to your application.
  6. Always remember to send in your applications well before the deadline.
