The IELTS is a globally accepted English language proficiency test. Australian universities require a score ranging from 5.5 to 6.5 or higher, from Indian applicants, based on the programme selected and the level of study.
Did you know that you can get admission in some Australian universities without writing the IELTS? Yes, it is possible and we will tell you how!
International Baccalaureate Programme:
If you have completed the International Baccalaureate Programme then you do not have to submit IELTS scores.
Alternative English Programme:
Leading universities like Swinburne University of Technology, Macquarie University and the University of Melbourne have their own dedicated English Language Schools. International students who do not meet the prescribed English language skills can complete the customised English courses offered by these schools in lieu of the IELTS. This may seem a bit confusing but many students receive a conditional offer every year to complete such English courses and then progress to the degree programme of their choice.
The University of Queensland waives away the IELTS requirement if the applicant has worked in an organisation where English is the primary language of communication and the applicant has at least 5 years of solid work-experience.
Looking Beyond the IELTS:
The IELTS is not the only test available. The equally popular TOEFL, Pearson Test of English (PTE) and Cambridge English Advanced Exam (CAE) are also widely accepted by Australian universities.
The University of Southern Queensland offers a number of Pathways Programmes to students to help them improve their language skills and offer a clear transition to a full-time degree at the University.
Given below is a list of popular universities in Australia where submission of IELTS scores is not mandatory:
- Macquarie University
- Bond University
- University of South Australia
- University of Southern Queensland
- University of New South Wales
- University of Adelaide
- Swinburne University of Technology
- University of Queensland
When you apply to study at an Australian university, the onus is on you to ascertain if it is mandatory to submit an IELTS score. Check with the Admissions Team or write to your academic counsellor to verify if the college offers an alternative option in the form of a
Pathways programme or a pre-sessional English course. You can browse through the extensive list of programmes offered by Australian universities and apply to an institution of your choice.
