University Doctoral Fellowship

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible, nominees must:

  • hold a valid student visa when they begin their UBC doctoral program
  • be starting a UBC-V doctoral program in January, May or September 2017. For fast-track students (who advance / transfer from a Master's to a doctoral program without completing their Master's degree), the effective date of transfer to the doctoral program must be January, May or September 2017.

Application details

On the basis of the submitted admission application materials, graduate programs will select one or more nominees to the campus-wide UDF competition. Those nominated to the campus-wide competition will be asked to submit a University Doctoral Fellowship application form. Two reference letters and transcripts from the online admission application plus the UDF application form will comprise the application file to be considered by the graduate program.

Graduate Global Leadership Fellowships

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold a study permit at the beginning of the fellowship funding period
  • Be a citizen of a developing country at the time of application for admission
  • Have shown outstanding leadership in humanitarian and development work in their home country
  • Be starting a PhD or DMA program at the UBC Vancouver campus in January 2017, May 2017, or September 2017
  • Be starting their first doctoral degree
  • Students with external funding (external scholarships, third-party sponsorship, etc.) are eligible to apply, but if successful, recipients will have their Graduate Global Leadership Fellowship funding reduced by the amount of their external funding.

Application details

Applicants must complete the application form and submit with the requested supporting documents. A complete application package consists of:

  • Completed Graduate Global Leaders Fellowships application form.
  • Academic records for all university-level studies (including studies undertaken but not completed) up to 31 December 2016. For institutions other than UBC, only official transcripts will be accepted. These may be original or certified true copies provided by the applicant's graduate program. For UBC, the applicant's "Academic History" printed from the SISC by the applicant's graduate program will be accepted. Please note that students must request certified true copies of transcripts from their graduate program, not from the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. If only unofficial admission transcripts are available, they will be accepted.
  • Two letters of reference. Letters of reference provided with student’s application for admission will be accepted.

Students submit their application package to their UBC graduate program - applications submitted directly to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will not be accepted.

James E. Axelson Outstanding Graduate Scholar Award

Eligibility requirements

The applicant will have completed a master’s or 4-year bachelor's (honours) degree in a relevant discipline and must:

  • Be applying to enter the first year of a full time PhD program in the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the time of this application. Note that a full application to the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD Program must accompany this scholarship application.
  • Have a minimum A or equivalent average in each of the last two years of full time study and must meet all the requirements for admission to the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD Program.
  • Have already secured a supervisor at the time of application. Co-supervision is permitted; at least one supervisor must be from the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Application details

Submit an application through the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by the February 15 deadline, and specify the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD program as the program to which you are applying.

Submit the following to the UBC-PHAR Pharmacy Graduate Program by the February 15 deadline:

  • A curriculum vitae and a cover letter from the applicant identifying the prospective supervisor(s) and describing the applicant’s career goals, academic and research accomplishments, extra-curricular activities and community service, reason(s) for applying for this award, and how this award will contribute to the applicant’s career aspirations.
  • A curriculum vitae and statement from the applicant’s supervisor(s) detailing history of graduate student supervision/mentoring and the proposed training and mentoring program for the applicant.

SERB-UBC Scholarship

Eligibility to apply for scholarship funding:

  • Applicants must be Indian citizens.
  • Applicants should be resident in India at the time of application.
  • Applicants must have completed their previous degree in India within the last 24 months of the application deadline.
  • Applicants must intend to undertake research in these priority areas: Materials, Energy, Sustainable Chemistry, Quantum Computing and Spintronics, Complex systems, Theoretical Mathematical Science, Big Data, Mechanobiology / Physical Biology, Bio-energy, Genetic to Physiology, Mental Health, High Performance Computation in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, Humanoid Robotics, Cognitive Science, Mechnotronics, Advanced Manufacturing, Cyber security, Encryption and decryption, Petroleum and Petro-Chemical Engineering, Science of Climate Change, Glaciology, Modeling, Imaging, Algorithms and Combinatorial Optimizations.

Application details

Applicants should:

  • apply to study at UBC at either its Vancouver or Okanagan campus following UBC's normal procedures and deadlines, and be offered admission by UBC. Applicants must state in their admission application that they intend to apply to SERB for the scholarship.
  • apply to SERB according to its published procedures and timetable, and be selected by SERB to receive funding towards PhD study.

Four Year Doctoral Fellowship

Eligibility requirements

Four Year Fellowships may be held by international students. In general, the fellowships are offered to students beginning their first year of PhD, DMA, or MDPhD studies, but may be offered to continuing students. 4YF funding may be offered for up to four years, but the duration of funding may be less in some circumstances. In all cases, funding is subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Students holding the following Tri-Agency awards automatically become 4YF designates: Vanier Scholarships, Doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGSD), CIHR Doctoral Research Awards, NSERC Doctoral Postgraduate Scholarships (PGSD), and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships. Doctoral students who obtain Tri-Agency scholarships may be eligible for 4YF tuition coverage and will receive 4YF stipend and tuition support once their external scholarship funding ends, until four years after the external award start date or until the end of their 5th year in Doctoral program, whichever comes first.

Other major external scholarship winners who are selected as 4YF designates may be eligible for 4YF tuition coverage and will receive 4YF stipend and tuition support once their external scholarship funding ends, until four years after the 4YF start date or until the end of their 5th year in Doctoral program, whichever comes first.

To be considered for Four Year Fellowship funding, students submit an application for admission to the appropriate graduate program at UBC.  All PhD, DMA, and MDPhD applicants offered admission are automatically considered for 4YF funding.

International Leader of Tomorrow Award

Eligibility requirements

The International Leader of Tomorrow Award recognizes international undergraduate students who demonstrate superior academic achievement, leadership skills, involvement in student affairs and community service, recognized achievement in fields of endeavour such as the performing arts, sports, debating or creative writing, or external academic competitions and examinations.

A standard needs-assessment is made, based on financial information provided by students and their families. The International Leader of Tomorrow Award can be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study, or to degree completion, whichever is less, provided the student achieves satisfactory academic standing in their faculty, continues to demonstrate financial need, and maintains their Canadian study permit (visa).

Receive an award-level commensurate with their financial need as determined by the costs of their tuition, fees and living costs, minus the financial contribution the student and their family can make annually towards these costs

Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award

Eligibility requirements

The Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award recognizes outstanding international undergraduate students from impoverished or war-torn areas, who have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances and who would be unable to pursue post-secondary education without financial assistance.

A Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award can be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study, or to degree completion, whichever is less, provided the recipient achieves satisfactory academic standing in their faculty, continues to demonstrate financial need, and maintains their Canadian Study Permit (visa).

Vantage One Excellence Award

Eligibility requirements

To be considered for the Vantage One Excellence Award at UBC, the nominee must:

  • be an international student, who is neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident of Canada, and who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian Study Permit (visa);
  • be entering a UBC undergraduate degree program at Vancouver campus from a recognized secondary school, or transferring from a recognized college or other university;
  • be applying for their first undergraduate degree;
  • be admissible to the program they are applying to, including meeting UBC Vantage College’s English Language Admission Standard (visit vantagecollege.ubc.ca/admissions for detailed admissions information);
  • have an excellent academic record (at least an “A” average or equivalent standard);
  • be nominated by the academic institution they are currently attending or have recently graduated from;
  • demonstrate a significant level of financial need that would otherwise prevent them from pursuing a UBC degree

Graduate Dean's Entrance Scholarship (GDES)

Eligibility requirements

  • Incoming, full-time, thesis-based graduate students.
  • Must have submitted an admission application by the applicable deadline.
  • Students applying to professional programs (MSN part-time, MSW, M.ED and M.ENG) are not eligible for this award.
  • Admission GPA must be first-class standing.
  • For the September admission period, applicants that have completed their admission application by January 31st will be given first priority.

Application details

  • All applicants that have submitted a complete admission application by the appropriate deadline will be automatically considered for the scholarship.
  • No additional application is required.

Outstanding International Student Award

  • be new to UBC, entering directly from secondary school or post-secondary (university or college)

  • demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and strong extra-curricular involvement.

Rio Tinto Alcan Research Fellowships

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in first year Masters or first year Doctoral studies in 2016 - 2017 academic year. The scholarship is non-renewable and students who received the scholarship in the past are not eligible to apply again.

International Major Entrance Scholarship

Each year, International Major Entrance Scholarships (IMES) are awarded to exceptional international students entering undergraduate programs at UBC. Students receive their scholarships when they enter their first year at UBC, and the scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years of study.

To be considered for the IMES, you must:

  • be a new student to UBC, entering directly from secondary school
  • be an international student who will be studying at UBC on a Canadian study permit (student visa). (Changes to your citizenship status will affect your IMES eligibility.)
  • demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, intellectual promise, as well as impressive extracurricular and community involvement

Application details

You must submit your UBC application for admission. All international students are automatically considered as soon as they have received an offer of admission to UBC.

International Tuition Awards

Eligibility requirements

Students are eligible for the International Tuition Award if they meet the following criteria:

  • Students must hold a valid Student Authorization (Study Permit)
  • Students must be registered full-time in one of the eligible graduate programs. For program eligibility and award amount, check your graduate program listing under Graduate Degree Programs (see Tuition / Program Costs box)
  • Students who receive external funding (e.g., their home government, Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship, or other funding agencies like CIDA, WUSC, DAAD, CONACYT, CONICYT, NSF, etc.) for their tuition which is equal to or higher than the value of the International Tuition Award are not eligible. Students who receive external funding toward their tuition which is lower than the value of the International Tuition Award will have their International Tuition Award reduced by the amount of the external tuition funding.
