About the accommodation

The College Houses at the University of Chicago integrate faculty, graduate student/staff Resident Heads, upper class resident assistants, and a cadre of 40 to 104 students who live together, learn together, laugh together, and care for one another. Eleven unique Residence Halls offer students a variety of living options. Each Hall has its own culture while maintaining a sense of community. Most Residence Halls are divided (often by floor) into House communities. Each House averages 70 students (Houses range from 40 to 104 students) sharing a cluster of residential rooms and common areas within the residence halls. Each House has its own traditions, its own House Council, its own resident staff, and its own House Lounge ? the ?family room? where House members gather at all hours. Each House also has its own House Tables in one of the residential dining commons where House members connect with one another throughout each day. All rooms are furnished with an extra-long twin bed (36x80), dresser or equivalent, desk, chair, corded telephone, book shelving, closet/armoir, and lighting. All residence hall rooms have some form of window treatments ? blinds, shades or curtains. Blackstone, Broadview, Max Palevsky, New Graduate, Stony Island and the student apartments in South Campus Residence Hall offer private bathrooms that are shared by up to a maximum of 5 people. The University of Chicago has established policies regarding the use of heat-producing appliances. For safety and sanitary reasons, cooking appliances are not permitted in rooms not equipped with kitchens installed by the University (Blackstone, Stony Island and South Campus apartments). Refrigerators 4.0 cubic feet and under are allowed in all rooms. Combo microwave/refrigerator units (ie; Microfridge) where the refrigerator plugs into the microwave are also permitted. The key feature of these units is that they manage power consumption ? reducing circuit overload and minimizing the risk of fire.
