- About University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Why did I choose this university?
‘When I started to apply to American universities, my goal was just to practice my English with local American students. I was accepted at a couple universities. But the primary reason why I chose UNL in the end was its attractive, affordable cost, and because it is also one of the top 50 public universities in the U.S. Undoubtedly, UNL was my best choice.’
My first week
‘My first week in UNL was quite smooth as I expected. I'm always independent and easy adapt to new environments. I also quickly connected into the lovely international community, making friends with the people who are friendly and nice. And that is the moment when I discovered my socializing ability.’
‘One of my favorite spots on campus is the fountain in front of the Union building. When it’s sunny, a lot of students will wear sunglasses and sit around the fountain, reading books or just simply chilling out and enjoying the sunshine. I go there with my friends very often.’
‘Lincoln is the capital city of Nebraska. It’s like a smaller, big city. People here are pretty nice, friendly and more conservative. They are also very crazy about American football. Every football game, you will see thousands of people wearing red Husker t-shirts flood into the stadium. The state of Nebraska is famous for corn production, so naturally our university football team is named the ‘Cornhuskers’. And we, the students, call ourselves ‘Huskers’ too.’
My study space
‘I take approximately 13-16 credit hours per semester. Each day I have classes on campus for 2-4 hours. Outside of class, I often call up some friends or classmates to go to the library to study, if we need a quiet environment. However, if we have to do group projects that require discussion, we would go to the Union Building, where there are restaurants, a cafe, and other kinds of organizations and services located there.’
My social life
‘During my spare time, I often go to watch a movie, have a cup of coffee in a coffee shop, and dine out with friends around downtown Lincoln near campus. I am actively involved in the Chinese Student & Scholar Association, where we often plan and organize events for the benefits of Chinese Students. I have friends from all over the world such as Germany, Czech Republic, Japan and Oman, etc. Sometimes, we gather together and organize some cultural events to connect the American students and International students. Globalization can be seen clearly here.’
‘I live in a student apartment on campus (the ‘University Suites’). One thing I like about living on campus is its convenience. We have double rooms and single rooms with a shared living room and a bathroom. You could apply for a double or single room. My three other roommates are all Americans, and we have become good friends.’
