The Tamil Nadu HSC Class XII examinations’ results are finally out - to the joy of some, disappointment of others, but undoubtedly to the relief of everyone! S Sushmita of S K V Higher Secondary School achieved the top rank, scoring 1189 marks out of 1200. Aiming to be a doctor, Sushmita said, "I had a feeling I would get above 1,100 marks. But I did not expect to score 1,189 marks and top the state! I am dedicating my victory to my teachers. They taught me well.” Here’s wishing Sushmita the very best to reach for the stars.

Apart from gaining an internationally recognized qualification and providing you global job prospects, studying abroad gives you access to the best of education standards and systems, excellent facilities and infrastructure, and exposure to different cultures and corporate environments. The added advantage of studying an undergraduate programme abroad - whether in the UK, the US, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand or Malaysia - is that, in most cases, you get to specialize in the stream you are absolutely passionate about. Over the years, the most sought-after subjects among students from India have tended to be the different engineering and medical streams, but the trend is fast-changing with more students showing a willingness to explore other areas of study, such as hospitality, communication and business.
Be it the arts, nanoscience, medicine, media and communication, business and management, finance or social work, renowned institutes abroad offer specializations along with electives. The advantage of selecting multiple electives is that you get to discover and be exposed to alternate lines of thought and inter-disciplinary approaches.
Students can avail grants and scholarships to reduce the cost of study. These are available over range of subject areas. There are a number of universities which offer scholarships that could cover tuition fees and other costs, or cover just your basic course fees inclusive of course material, or partial scholarships contributing only a percentage of fees.
Most international educational institutes have admission officers who help you from step one – from choosing the right programme to managing funds, securing admission to the desired college to finding a proper place to live. Institutes could even have regional offices or representatives in your own city to address your queries and help you with not only admissions, but the visa process as well.
