Practical advice for Iranian students applying to study in Australia

426

Have you ever considered studying in Australia? It is a warm, welcoming country with some of the world’s most fascinating animals and landmarks, as well as the most laid-back residents you will ever meet. You could learn a lot at an Australian university as an Iranian student, both in and out of class!

The first step to take is to apply to a university. The application procedure varies from university to university, so we recommend checking the individual university website and getting in touch directly with the university.

In the meantime, we’ve taken a look at the application process at two different universities, the University of Sydney and Monash University. By providing a step-by-step guide for these two different institutions, it should help you visualise what your application process will look like.

Don’t want to study at Monash or Sydney? Why not use our Australian university search tool to find your dream institution and course.

University of Sydney

The University of Sydney is among the top universities in the world. Not only is it known for its academic excellence, but their “main Camperdown/Darlington campus is regularly recognized as one of the most beautiful in the world,” according to their school website.

This university has several types of programs for international students, including the International Exchange Program, in which students from the University of Sydney’s partner universities can come and study for a semester or less at the University of Sydney. There is also the Sydney Abroad program, in which international students can enrol as a full-time student and earn credit at the university. The former of these options requires no additional cost, but the latter does include tuition fees. We will focus on the latter, because it is more likely that you, the student, will be studying abroad there instead of doing an exchange.

According to University of Sydney’s list of requirements, “to be considered for the Sydney Abroad or student exchange programs you will normally have completed at least one year of study towards a degree at a recognized institution in your home country and be continuing towards the degree at your home institution.” In some special cases, you can apply just after finishing high school. In either case, though, you must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and be able to prove your competency in the English language. This can be done by providing the university with the score you received on one of several English language tests, such as the TOEFL or the IELTS, or by showing them transcripts of your studies in qualifying English classes.

To get the application process started online, you can go to the University of Sydney website and click on the “Find a Course” page. This page includes a link to the application. You must decide if you would like to study at the university for one semester or an entire year. There are many dates to keep in mind when applying to this university to be sure that you get your documents and application in on time. Here is a link to these dates, so that you can find what months you would need to apply if you were to go to the University of Sydney. (The first semester starts in March, and the second starts in July.)

Monash University

Monash University in Victoria is another beautiful campus. This school is also ranked within the top 1% in the world, according to its website. To apply, you must be at least 17 years old, and you must be proficient in English, which can be proven the same way as with the University of Sydney. Some classes require a higher level of English fluency, so be sure to check the requirements for the courses you would like to take. You should also check the requirements of your individual courses to be sure that you have completed all of the necessary prerequisites for that particular class.

As an Iranian student, you must also have your Iranian Pre-University Certificate in order to be admitted to the university. The Monash University website has a very useful tool for helping you to discover the specific requirements for your course of study. If you go to the Undergraduate Qualifications Database page, you can select the field you are interested in (business, education, art history, etc.), as well as the qualifications you already have (in this case, the Iranian Pre-University Certificate). By entering this information and clicking “Submit,” the exact requirements you need will be displayed in a green box on the upper right side of the page. Convenient! The requirements will be specific to you, so make sure that you enter the correct information here, and do thorough research.

Final Thoughts

With Australian universities, it is important to focus on each course you want to take, not just the entire semester, when it comes to applying and registering. Some courses have different requirements than others, and you’ll want to make sure that you are qualified. If you do not think that you have achieved a high enough level in your English proficiency, many Australian universities (Such as Monash) offer a pre-university English course that will help you get on the right track. If you are unsure about some aspect of the application process, feel free to email the university’s admissions department. They will be more than happy to help you.

Remember, though, that the requirements and procedures are different for each university you apply to; the above two were just examples to help demystify the process. So remember, research is key!
