Passion for Fashion in London

907

London is one of the most dazzling fashion capitals of the world. The city is home to numerous well-known designer stores and plenty of high street fashion franchises. Several international fashion designers launched themselves from London onto the world stage and many new designers from abroad also come here to make a name for themselves. From the vintage shops on Brick Lane to Knightsbridge’s chic boutiques, and their surroundings of style and vogue, it is not surprising to find a wide number of fashion courses in the city as well as throughout the UK.

University : where to study?
Most universities in the UK offer fashion related courses, from textile design to fashion journalism courses. Students who are looking to study fashion for their bachelor degree are normally required to complete a one-year foundation course which prepares them for an exciting yet demanding degree. Although fashion studies opportunities are widely available throughout the UK, there are plenty of reasons why London has become so special among fashionistas around the globe.

One of those reasons is the number of universities which have been the Alma Mater of several international top designers. The London College of Fashion, for example, boasts highly successful alumni such as Jimmy Choo, Linda Bennett for LK Bennett and many others. The college is part of the University of the Arts London, a leading university in Europe in the provision of fashion studies. Central Saint Martins is another college member of this university, with Stella McCartney and Christopher Kane as a sample of their countless exceptional graduates. Another top-notch university for fashion studies in London is University of Westminster. Their fashion course has guided a number of fashion entrepreneurs, among them are the chief creative director of Burberry, Christopher Bailey, and the globally known designer Vivienne Westwood.

Career Opportunities
Being a city so devoted to fashion means that London provides several fashion-related job opportunities for students. From work placements, internships, and career jobs, fashion students in London are on the perfect platform to experience the industry directly. It is common among fashion design students or graduates to begin their career by working as assistant designers of experienced professionals.

As a case study, Danya Sjadzali, a fashion design student in the UK is among those who are aiming to work in the fashion industry. By helping Michael Van Der Ham in his fashion studio, she is preparing herself for her future career. Like in any other fields, the fashion market can be demanding.  Although jobs in the fashion industry can be highly competitive, the field offers a large range of roles in which you can get involved.

Fashion shows
Studying in London also allows you to experience the catwalks and work behind the scenes of the world’s largest fashion events! Throughout the year, London becomes a host to large fashion shows and events. London Fashion Week is the most famous event, out of the many that take place in the capital city every year. This event is held for one week during each season, where participating designers can show their newest couture collections to the public. Aside from top selling designers, fashion students are also given the chance to exhibit their work in this spectacular event. However, only lucky chosen students of Central Saint Martins College are granted this opportunity every February. A fashion event especially designed for fashion students is the Graduate Fashion Week held every June, where the most talented students across 50 universities can showcase their work. The opportunity gives them strong links within the fashion industry.

Museums
The most valuable characteristic of being a student in London is that your study does not actually end once you step out of the classroom or complete your assignments! London itself is a city to study in detail, as it houses a vast collection of museums with precious antiques and items. The Victorian and Albert Museum  and the Fashion and Textile Museum are home to many valuable fashion collections.

Fashion students can definitely benefit a lot from studying in London as there are many opportunities that could get you into the fashion industry. For more information about scholarships for creative art and fashion courses, please follow the link.  Good Luck!
