5 Unique bachelor’s degrees in America

America is a huge country. With so many universities to study at, it’s natural that there is a long list of degrees to be earned. Every year there’s list documenting the highest paid university degrees or most popular bachelor’s degree. However, there is also a list of the ‘unsung heroes’ of the weird and downright strange degrees that can also be earned in the US. Our student editor Ashley lists the top five unique degrees that can be read in America.

5. Sports Ministry

There are eleven universities that support Sports Ministry as a major subject focus. The course is designed for students that have a strong conviction with their faith and wish to serve the Lord and provide coaching support through church sports programmes. Students are trained through biblical study and sport courses to be effectively equipped the disciples of Jesus Christ. International students are welcomed to take up the course, although TOEFL scores are required as well as relevant previous coursework score and a health exam. For an example of this course, check out the BA in Biblical Studies – Sports Ministry from the Washington Bible College.

4. Puppetry

It seems the generation that grew up on Sesame Street has come of age, and they’re studying for degrees in Puppetry! At the University of Colorado, there are not one, but two postgraduate degrees (MA & MFA) that are currently offered in the study of Puppetry. Students learn to make their own puppets, study theatre arts, the art of movement and even Papier Mache for puppetry among other subjects. Performance is expected in a range of environments: local theatres, schools and museums.

3. Packaging

Most students are taught to think ‘outside’ the box, but for those studying a packaging degree, their goal is to think ‘inside’ the box. Heavily focused on math and science, students are taught on the food industry track learn the essentials of proper packaging of items. This includes understanding specific scientific elements that help control the taste, colour and texture for preservation and safety of the food product. Sound like a waste of time? According to CNN in 2011, “In a survey on 2009 graduates of the UWS program, in the months following graduation, 95 percent of packaging graduates were employed, 90 percent in a field related to their major.”

2. Floral Management

Mississippi State University is the only institution that offers a degree in Floral Management. The course covers all the basics for anyone interested in running their own floral business: sourcing flowers, purchasing, arranging, distributing and marketing. Graduates of the degree have strong prospects in special event design, retailing, and display gardening. As the only university in the US that provides such instruction, this degree creates individuals instead of cookie cutter graduates.

1. Magic & Enigmatology

It’s a bit cheeky, but these two degrees deserve the number one spot for the soul fact that only one person has ever achieved each degree! Will Shortz designed his own course at Indiana University and in 1974 became the only person to ever graduate with a degree in Enigmatology, which is the creation and solution of puzzles. He’s currently the crossword puzzle editor at The New York Times. Although no longer available from UC Berkeley, from 1966-1970, Isaac Bonewits is the only person to ever receive a Bachelor of Arts in Magic from an accredited university.  Education is magic!
