Overview

Students searching for a well-rounded and high-quality scientific education in China should definitely apply to study at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Huazhong, often simply called HUST, gets great academic results, has strong graduate employability figures and offers several scholarship options to international (and domestic) students. In fact, lots of people call HUST the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) of China.

Founded in 1957, HUST has already been able to create strong national and international partnerships with universities and employers around the globe. Students at HUST can study in 12 different faculties across over 300 BA, MA and PhD programmes.

There are currently just over 58,000 students enrolled, and almost 3,000 of these students come from an international background. The institution welcomes people from all backgrounds and helps them to settle in, learn a lot, and fully enjoy student life in Wuhan.

HUST offers courses that are fully taught in Mandarin Chinese and courses that are fully taught in English. Postgraduate English-speaking applicants should be aware that there are some higher-level programmes taught in English at HUST that have a really good reputation globally, attracting lots of interest and a competitive number of applications.

HUST’s two campuses are close to student residence apartments and the centre of Wuhan. Wuhan is a city with a reputation for important research, and the university’s many research centres and opportunities are a part of this reputation. Students don’t just get theoretical knowledge from their tutors and lecturers, they also learn practical research skills that prepare them well for the working world and increase their level of employability.

The HUST library contains over five million books, e-journals and materials. Lots of scholarships are awarded for academic merit. Currently ranked by QS World University Rankings as the 55th best Asian university, HUST’s reputation gets better every year.

Teaching Quality

The teaching quality at HUST is fantastic. It is currently ranked as the 181st best university in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022, and it has gained that ranking through quality teaching, exciting research efforts and a real dedication to student success.

The teaching message at HUST is all about finding a brighter future and giving students a well-rounded education. There are 3,400 full-time faculty members, including 1,600 staff with overseas experience and 2,500 professors and associate professors. Every faculty member cares about student needs.

Another reason that high quality teaching is the standard is the faculty-to-student ratio of 16.2 to one. With this ratio, class sizes are small and manageable. Every student has the chance to be heard and to get the right amount of attention and focus from their professor.

HUST ranks in the top one per cent of universities in China in seven different subject areas: engineering, material science, physics, clinical medicine, chemistry, computer science and toxicology. Even though it was only founded in the 1950s, HUST is an award-winning institution and several academics from the university have been made honorary members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

HUST has partnered with over 90 international universities in important research areas. One of its most important facilities is the China-EU Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy. The future of the planet matters as much at this university as the future of every student who attends, and HUST is working to make the future as bright as possible.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for HUST vary between courses and levels of study, and they will also be different for English-speaking courses and Chinese-speaking courses. There are six undergraduate programmes taught fully in English, as well as 106 MA programmes and 124 PhD programmes. The general university entry requirements for undergraduate applicants to English-speaking courses are that:

  • They should be under 30 years old
  • They need at least a high school diploma or the equivalent
  • They should be able to prove a certain level of English proficiency

International students from across the globe generally come to HUST for the large range of postgraduate courses taught in English. Postgraduate applicants must meet similar criteria but must also have achieved relevant university qualifications, including an undergraduate degree. They should also be under the age of 35 for an MA or 40 for a PhD. Some courses at HUST are extra competitive, like the MA in western economics. For this programme, students will need a BA grade of over 60 per cent.

English Score Required

Since courses at HUST are taught in English and Chinese, the university asks applicants to have a certain level of skill in those languages. The following are guidelines for students applying for bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 2022.

Courses taught in Chinese for science, engineering and medicine ask for an HSK Band 4 score of at least 180. If students are applying for programmes in economics, management, literature, education, philosophy, arts or law, then they must achieve an HSK Band 5 minimum score of 180.

If they’re applying to study an undergraduate course in English, then they must achieve a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 or above or a minimum International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band score of 5.5.

The language score requirements for postgraduate students are exactly the same as the requirements listed above, though they can avoid the scores if their previous degrees were taught in their chosen language of study. The university also recognises other internationally standardised language tests, including the Duolingo English Test.

HUST wants to help students meet the language requirements and feel comfortable in their written and spoken abilities. Over the past 30 years, for example, over 5,000 international students have developed and enhanced their Chinese language skills through the university’s Chinese Learning Programme.

Admission

The admission process at HUST is easy to follow and understand. The process is the same for international applicants whether they’re undergraduates or postgraduates, though extra supporting documents might be needed with an application at the postgraduate level.

There are a few simple steps to student admission, and all students should make sure that they understand the application process fully before they begin. The steps between application and university admission are:

  1. An applicant logs in to the online application system.
  2. An applicant chooses a programme, takes the Online Application Test, submits the application and uploads the required documents.
  3. An applicant pays the non-refundable application fee. This is RMB 600 for international students and can be paid in a number of ways, including via Visa and MasterCard.
  4. An applicant waits to hear from the university about their admission decision.
  5. If offered a place, an applicant must accept it and officially enrol.

The documentation undergraduate students provide when they apply to study at HUST includes:

  • A valid passport
  • A high school graduation certificate and high school transcripts (if these aren’t in English or Chinese, then the student must supply a translation)
  • A Physical Health Examination form
  • A certificate of non-criminal record
  • A bank statement proving an applicant has USD 5,000 or above in funds
  • A personal statement (including an introduction, an explanation of their understanding of China and their reasons for/expectations of studying at HUST)
  • A study plan
  • A Language Proficiency Certificate

Postgraduate applicants must supply the same documentation, as well as a CV, a student plan or research proposal and two letters of recommendation (signed by former lecturers or renowned professors in their desired field of study). If they’re applying for the Chinese Government Scholarship, they must do this online.

Tuition fees also depend on the level of study and course. For example, a bachelor’s degree student in science, engineering, economics or management will pay an average of RMB 30,000 per year if they study in English. In the same subject area, a PhD candidate will pay RMB 50,000 per year.

Scholarships & Funding

HUST offers several university scholarships to international students at all levels. It invites applications from as many international students as possible and wants to support them with tuition fees and living costs.

The Chinese University Programme Scholarship is provided through the Ministry of Education and aims to encourage Chinese universities to take on international students studying at a master’s or PhD level. It’s a full tuition scholarship, and it also covers accommodation costs, a monthly allowance and medical insurance. Recipients must be non-Chinese citizens. At the master’s level, they should be under 35. At the PhD level, they should be under 40.

The Chinese Government Scholarship-Bilateral Programme is a partnership between the Chinese government and the governments of other countries, institutions, universities and international organisations. It is only available for exchange students, as it is based on agreements made between institutions. It supports exchange students in bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and scholarship programmes.

The 2022 International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship offers a range of awards to non-Chinese citizens aged between 18 and 35. These awards fully cover tuition, accommodation and medical insurance, as well as a monthly living allowance.

The MOFCOM Scholarship also covers all of a student’s tuition, as well as their medical insurance, their accommodation, a monthly allowance and a one-time round-trip international air travel fare. It’s provided by the university in the following programmes:

University Structure

HUST has 11 subject areas, which contain 86 undergraduate programmes, 303 Master’s programmes and 237 PhD programmes:

  • Agriculture
  • Economics
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • History
  • Law
  • Literature
  • Medicine
  • Management
  • Philosophy
  • Science

These subjects can be broken into three key research areas: sciences and engineering, social sciences and medicine (for which classes and courses are based at the Tongji Medical College). All departments interact and connect often to make sure students get the best possible standard of education, and support and advice is available through many different channels.

Included in HUST’s departments and faculties is the Tongji Medical College, mentioned above. This is the university’s union hospital and main healthcare unit. It provides excellent care and support to students who need it for either physical or mental health disabilities and also acts as a great research and experience centre for HUST’s medical students.

HUST is also home to some of China’s best modern research laboratories and centres. For example, the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics is one of only five national laboratories across China.

Other key institutes that provide students with world-class resources include the National Innovation Institute of Design and Manufacturing, the National Engineering Technology Research Centre (containing the Laser Processing Centre, the Digital Manufacturing Equipment Centre, and more) and the National Professional Laboratory.

Facilities

HUST wants its students to get the most out of their academic studies and socialising. Its educational facilities are amazing, but there are also plenty of student recreation centres, on campus and in the wider city of Wuhan.

The university’s teaching buildings are some of the best study spaces in all of China, whether students are involved in group projects, attending seminars or working alone. Each lecture theatre is a safe and quiet working environment, and there are indoor and outdoor study areas available across the beautiful green campus.

The university library is a hub of learning, a student life centre with a collection of over five million books, including four million hard copy items and a huge electronic database. There are also over 40,000 video materials on offer, as well as 20,000 e-journals. Students always have the materials and resources they need.

HUST encourages students to learn and stay active, and the university invests a lot in its sporting facilities and student activity centres. Students can play games from football to billiards and enjoy sports from swimming to martial arts. The Optics Valley Gymnasium is one of the best options on campus, and students can enjoy fitness classes and activities here.

Finally, there are a few different types of accommodation open to international students at HUST. Accommodation sites are in central Wuhan near the university, so the campus facilities can all be within easy reach of student residences.

Accommodation

All international students are offered a range of student house options once they have successfully enrolled at HUST. Accommodation is in central Wuhan, not far from the campus, so students can enjoy city life and all the university’s useful facilities, centres and buildings.

There are five different apartment types offered to international students. The Huahong Apartments offer single rooms (RMB 900 per month) and rooms with shared washrooms (RMB 600 per month). The Friendship Apartments, only available to scholarship students, offer single rooms, double rooms and private suites for varying prices.

The Bojingge Apartment Complex is one of the most popular student accommodation options, and a single room is charged annually at RMB 10,000.  Double rooms at Bojingge are also charged annually, like double rooms at the Hongjia Building Complex.

The last type of university accommodation available is the Tongji Medical College Apartments. All the rooms at Tongji Medical College come complete with washrooms, water heaters, air conditioning units, Wi-Fi and furniture.

The average living costs per month for someone staying at student accommodation in Wuhan can be between RMB 800 to 2,000, including textbook and Resident Permit fees. Wherever students find their accommodation at HUST, the International Student Office can help with any problems or questions. Each apartment building will introduce new students to a friendly, safe community.

Student Support

HUST wants to make student life in China as easy as possible for international students. That’s why it offers such a wide range of student support initiatives and student services, accessible even before a student arrives in the country.

The university’s Help Centre can answer any questions about admission and registration, applying for student visas, changing visas to residence permits, and so on. The centre has dedicated student support programmes to help with any issues.

International student support services also include accurate student guides, leaflets, and information sessions focused on arriving in Wuhan, getting to the university/the university accommodation and settling into life at HUST.

Once the first semester has started, there are lots of other student services on campus, from healthcare (physical and mental) to academic assistance. HUST actually has three hospitals in total for students’ physical health needs: Tongji Hospital, Union Hospital and Liyuan Hospital. Tongji Hospital and Union Hospital are actually considered the two greatest hospitals in south-central China.

Graduate Outcomes

The QS Graduate Employability Rankings name HUST the number one institution in China for employer/student connections and put the university in the top 120 across the globe for graduate employability. These exciting rankings put HUST ahead of some established and well-known universities, and they prove just how many networking opportunities and great career services there are at the institution.

With especially impressive results in subject areas like medical sciences, engineering and toxicology, HUST students can expect to enjoy lots of job prospects if they want to work in these fields after they graduate.

There are lots of global HUST alumni success stories to tell. Former student Alex Kontogeorgos now works as a product manager at the headquarters of international firm XIAOMI in Wuhan, having graduated from HUST in 2019. Several Ethiopian graduates have gone on to achieve huge things in their home country.

Students at HUST enjoy employment services like one-to-one appointments with a career guide, internship opportunities, networking opportunities, career guidance sessions and career preparation workshops.

With an International Research Network rating of 75 per cent, it’s clear that HUST works very hard to connect students and recent graduates with a wide range of career options. Whatever future a HUST student chooses can be theirs, and it all begins with the choice to enrol at this respected Chinese research university.
