Course summary
This course is suitable for people seeking to develop a career or undertake further studies in the computer and electronic industries. Students will gain a broad background in electronics, with an emphasis on embedded controllers, data array technologies, photonics, computer hardware interfacing, RF technologies, and other areas. The skills attained will also include analysis, diagnosis, fault finding and repair of electronic equipment and systems; primary planning, analysis and design, focused on complex electronic systems related to the hardware, control software and their inter-relationships; identifying customer and client needs; supervision and facilitation of the routine performance of these functions and commissioning of advanced electronic systems and equipment. Students will learn how to design and develop electronics/computer system projects, use engineering applications software, modify/redesign electronics and communication systems, apply OH and S practices in the workplace, design printed circuit boards and solve electrotechnical problems. It aims to provide students with a full para-professional qualification suitable for performing the duties of a technical officer or similar engineering assistant. Graduates may work in para-professional position in the procurement, debugging or design fields, as a servicing and maintenance engineer in industries such as mining, telecommunications, transport, entertainment and medical electronics, as a technical officer/manager in public services and defence, as a technical consultant or as a hardware and software field service engineer.
Entry requirement for international students
Applicants must have a satisfactory completion of the Swinburne English for Academic Purposes Advanced level certificate at the pathways level (EAP 5: Pathways -60%) or, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; or a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); or TOEFL (Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); or TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.
