Course summary
This course gives students the opportunity to deepen and broaden their understanding of how the English language works from a structural, historical, socio-cultural, developmental and pedagogical perspective. It focuses on the design of English, how it functions in society, how it develops and changes, how it relates to thought and how it is acquired and learned. Students develop specialised skills in analysing the structure of the English language as well as being able to critically assess its written texts. They develop an understanding of the problems encountered in intercultural communication and learn how English has come to be a global language. Students develop sophisticated skills in professional writing and oral communication.
Entry requirement for international students
Students must have academic Year 12, International Baccalaureate or equivalent academic qualification. VCE prerequisites include Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites include a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL. They must have achieved the following English language proficiency test results: IELTS (minimum test score of 6.5 overall; no individual band less than 6.0); Paper-based TOEFL (minimum test score of 580; a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5); Internet-based TOEFL (a score of at least 90 overall; a Writing score of at least 22; no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test); Cambridge English CAE (A grade); Cambridge English CEP (C grade).
