Course summary
This program helps graduates to have the technological and creative skills required to meet the demands of high-tech consumer product design. The combination creates a professional who is often called a product design engineer. The product design engineer blends engineering with the humanities and boasts a wide range of practical, creative and problem-solving skills. They are ideally qualified to manage innovative and diverse organisations. Students complete core units in mechanical engineering alongside units in industrial design. The industrial design program includes a series of design studio units that develop an understanding of the theories of perception, problem solving in design and the creativity process. Set projects encourage experimentation with various two and three dimensional materials, techniques and methods of interpretation, presentation and communication skills. Units in model making, ergonomics, history of design and visual culture teach students to use technical and design skills in the creation of new manufactured products, and to synthesise advanced technology and consumer product design. The degree can lead to a career in transportation design, production engineering, and product and design development. Graduates may also pursue a career as a mechanical engineer.
