Course summary
This course is the opportunity to make a difference to the health and wellbeing of future generations. The course focuses firstly on helping students to develop a greater understanding of the fate of agricultural raw materials, and secondly on the technology of food such as preservation, processing, packaging and distribution to ensure that food is safe, nutritious, and wholesome. Graduates of the course are critical thinkers with skills and techniques related to the processing of agricultural raw materials, and will have a working knowledge of broad areas of application of food science and technology in industry. The course also enhances the need to understand the importance of food to human nutrition and wellbeing. Graduates from this program are very much in demand in food industries due in part to their scientific understanding of the technical aspects of food, beginning with harvesting and preparation and ending with consumption.
Entry requirement for international students
Students must have academic Year 12, International Baccalaureate or equivalent academic qualification. VCE prerequisites include units 3 and 4 - one of biology, chemistry, mathematical methods (either), physics, geography, psychology or specialist mathematics and a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites include One of biology (any), chemistry (any), geography (any), mathematics SL, further mathematics SL, mathematics HL, physics (any) or psychology (any), and a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL. They must have achieved the following English language proficiency test results: IELTS (minimum test score of 6.5 overall; no individual band less than 6.0); Paper-based TOEFL (minimum test score of 580; a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5); Internet-based TOEFL (a score of at least 90 overall; a Writing score of at least 22; no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test); Cambridge English CAE (A grade); Cambridge English CEP (C grade).
