Course summary
This major will help students understand disease from a molecular, cellular, tissue, functional, biochemical and immunological perspective. Knowledge will be integrated from a range of disciplines from Human Biology to Molecular Genetics. Using the newest research techniques available, students will explore the various methods used in finding answers to some of these. A major in Pathology can open up career opportunities in a range of laboratory settings. These include research laboratories in universities, hospitals or research institutes; diagnostic laboratories in hospitals and private diagnostic pathology services; and biotechnology laboratories. Students could also find work or undertake further study in a broad range of areas, such as education, the pharmaceutical or scientific equipment industries, journalism, or publishing. This major gives students the background to undertake further graduate research training in pathology. It is important to be aware that by completing Pathology major students will learn about pathology, but they will not become a pathologist. This job title is given to those who have completed graduate studies in medicine, followed by several further years of specialist pathology studies while working in a hospital pathology department. Graduates are well-placed to apply for: professionally focused graduate degrees in the sciences and technology, including biotechnology, environmental systems, informatics, management science, and nanotechnology; graduate degrees preparing for a wide range of professions including engineering, law, medicine and other health sciences, and teaching; and masters and Honours pathways to research higher degrees in the sciences and technology within Melbourne Graduate School of Science, Melbourne School of Engineering, Melbourne School of Land and Environment, and the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
