This program involves the study of the complex issues of crime and criminal justice. Criminologists work in federal and state justice agencies such as research and statistics institutes, police and courts. Correctional authorities also employ criminologists as researchers, assessors and policy advisers whilst others are in private practice providing consulting services for law reform, justice, forensic psychology, behavioural science or crime statistics. Griffith University was one of the pioneers of the criminology degree in Australia and provides students with a smarter path to a wide range of career opportunities in the criminal justice system. This diploma program mirrors the first year of the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice program which provides a grounding in criminology and criminal justice and the basic elements of the four disciplines on which it rests (i.e. law, political science, psychology and sociology). Students will undertake the first year of the program within a supportive learning environment which incorporates classes at both QIBT and Griffith. Upon successful completion of the diploma program, graduates will articulate to the second year of the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice program. Diploma of Criminology and Criminal Justice graduates will have an understanding of the basic fundamentals of criminology and the justice system and be prepared to undertake second year degree studies after successfully completing 80 credit points of first year courses. Graduates will also be able to demonstrate progress towards the development of a number of generic skills including effective communication, researching, information literacy, problem solving and evaluation, critical thinking and an understanding of academic integrity. Additionally, graduates will have begun to develop skills in working autonomously and in teams, time management and organisational skills, cultural awareness and tolerance. Students will be able to articulate to the following degree program in either semester one or two. Graduates of this diploma program will articulate to the second year of this degree program with 80 credit points of credit which includes credit for the Academic and Professional Skills Development course as an unspecified elective.
