Course summary
This program integrates the traditional PhD training in research via the preparation and presentation of an empirical and original research thesis, with coursework and internship training in theory and techniques in clinical psychology. The purpose of the program is to provide training for the growing number of clinical psychologists who wish to pursue specialist careers in clinical research settings, including universities, hospitals, specialist research foundations and government bodies. Students who complete the PhD program will have acquired a high level of competence in assessment, treatment and research. While the emphasis of the training program addresses the use of these skills with individuals who are experiencing psychological distress and disorders, the use of this skill set in other settings is also addressed during training (e.g. forensic psychological practice, consultation to other agencies and organisations). Combined with the students inherent personal skills, the training program has the capacity to prepare professional psychologists for entry into an almost limitless array of possible careers - Academia, Administration, Research Institutes, Private Practice, Departments of Health and Mental Health, Child Protection agencies, Consultative Enterprises, and many others. One asset of this program is that it offers professionals a great degree of flexibility in choosing their career path or changing its direction over a lengthy career. Attainment of the PhD degree permits one to hold a wide variety of positions, not only in Australia, but throughout the world.
Entry requirement for international students
Students should have completed an honours degree in psychology, accredited by the Australian Psychological Society (APS), at the level of First Class or Second Class (Division A). Candidates will also be considered if they have completed a Master's degree in psychology if the training Masters training program was APS - accredited and included a significant research component. Applicants who have completed comparable training and degrees outside Australia will be considered for admission, but are advised to submit an academic transcript to the APS which will assess whether their training is equivalent to an Honours degree from an Australian university.
