Course summary

This course is designed for polytechnic Biomedical Science graduates who intend to work in clinical diagnostic or research and development (R&D) laboratories where phlebotomy skill is an asset. The objective of this course is to train polytechnic graduates to perform phlebotomy procedures in a professional manner.

Program modules

The modules are Anatomy and Physiology for Phlebotomist, Healthcare Workplace Practices, Phlebotomy and non-blood specimen collection and Clinical Practicum.

Entry requirement for international students

Students from Hong Kong (SAR) need to have completed Hong Kong Certificate of Education (HKCEE) and / or Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE). Indian students must have completed Secondary School Certificate (Year 10) or Senior School Certificate (Year 12). Indonesian students need to have done SMA Ujian Akhir Nasional (UAN) / STTB SMA or SMA, SMU Ebtanas. Malaysian students must possess Unified Examination Certificate and Unified Examination Certificate - Vocational. Students from Myanmar should have Basic Education High School (BEHS). People's Republic of China students must fulfill Gaokao or National College Entrance Examination (NCEE). Thailand students should have completed Maw 6. Vietnam students need to have undertaken Year 12 High School Graduation Certificate of National Exam and students from other countries must have qualification in GCSE/IGCSE/GCE (non Singapore-Cambridge) and/ or other qualifications (will be assessed based on its equivalence to the GCE 'O' level examinations). Those who hold International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma qualification are required to satisfy the requirements which are based on the IB Diploma (Middle Years Programme is not considered): For English, a grade 4 (first Lang) or 5 (second Lang) is required except for Creative Writing for Television and New Media and Media and Communication courses where a grade 5 (first Lang) or 6 (second Lang) is required; Maths and Relevant Subject requires a minimum grade of 5. The Overall Aggregate score should be at least 22 (based on 5 subjects including English, Maths and Relevant Subject).

The School of Chemical and Life Sciences (CLS) is often known as the most colourful school in SP. This is because it offers a wide range of courses to train technologists for the food industry, polymer industry, chemicals industry, petrochemicals industry, process industry, pharmaceutical and healthcare industry plus the biomedical industry (encompassing the biotechnology, agrotechnology, optometry, medical and allied health sectors). With a team of over 100 qualified and experienced academic staff, CLS offers nine full-time diplomas,two advanced diplomas and five specialist diplomas to a student intake of about 650 new students per year. Upon completion of the diploma programme, the graduates are known as food technologists, polymer technologists, industrial chemists, process technologists, medical technologists, cardiac technologists or optometrists. Additionally, CLS has excellent academic and industry links both locally and regionally. Course curricula are always kept up-to-date based on feedback from the industries, universities and past graduates. Many of the staff also serves in external professional committees and their technical expertise is typically deployed in consultancy or applied R andD work. Student training is supported by state-of-the-art facilities housing sophisticated equipment which provide students with the necessary hands-on experience to meet industry needs. CLS students are also given the opportunity to acquire relevant experience through industrial or clinical attachments and through industry-based projects. As a result, CLS graduates are well prepared for working life and are highly sought after.

The Singapore Polytechnic Student Service Centre (SSC) provides the following services for students who are looking for accommodation in the polytechnic's vicinity. The three types of accommodation available are shared houses/apartments, room in owner-occupied apartments and private hostels. In shared houses/apartments a group of students can get together to rent a house or a flat, and share amenities such as living room, kitchen, bathroom and toilet. Residents do their own cleaning and may have to pay their own utility bills. Room in owner-occupied apartments (mostly in housing and development board apartments) is the most common type of housing for international students. For this type of rental unit, the owner also resides in the flat. Students negotiate with owners on the use of amenities like washing machine, cooking facilities, telephone, TV, etc. Polytechnic students take a few private hostels and each has its own range of charges for room and board, and facilities.
