Course summary

This program aims to graduate expressive and imaginative dancers who can confidently fulfill the dance demand made of them in local dance companies, dance events, and in musical theatre companies. Students will learn dance techniques and expressions in a wide range of styles, periods and genres, including Pop, Social, Jazz, Ballroom, Ballet, and Contemporary Dance. Contextual studies support the necessary understanding of distinct stylistic features, supplementing dance practice and dance skills. They will be trained to become versatile and flexible dancers, at ease with any choreographic requirements for popular, social, and musical theatre dancing. Essentials of classical ballet, contemporary dance, and physical theatre are used but are not specialisations. Quick learning techniques are taught to enable professional time saving, along with self-learning from video sources. The technical skills are further complemented with management projects to understand career paths and options, audition techniques, and employment contracts. Music training will enhance knowledge of style, rhythm, and cultural sources. It provides internships and business training with hands-on experience in a range of on-stage and behind-the-scenes positions, equipping them with professional employment qualifications and a solid foundation for future specialisations in choreography, education, management, and research. Graduates can progress as a dancer.

Program modules

The modules covered are: Dance Technique 1; Performance Technique 1; Performance Studies I; Performance Project 1. Level 2 covers Dance Technique 2; Performance Technique 2; Performance Studies 2; Performance Project 2. Level 3 covers Dance Technique 3; Performance Technique 3; Performance 3; Performance Project 3.

Entry requirement for international students

Applicants from India should have completed Secondary School Certificate (Standard 10) - Indian Certification of Secondary Education (ICSE) by Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination; Central Board of Secondary Education Examinations (CBSE). Applicants from other countries should have country specific requirements equivalent to Singapore. Also applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate their proficiency in any one of the following English language requirements: IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL score of 525 in PBT, 197 in CBT and 71 in iBT. They are also required to attend an interview where they will present a portfolio of their work that demonstrates their creative potential.
