Course summary
The objective of the programme is to facilitate conceptual understanding of pre-school education and child development, as presented in the current context of early childhood education in Singapore as well as international context; and to raise awareness of contemporary issues pertaining government guidelines, policies, curriculum and current research in pre-school education. It equips students with skills on the theoretical and practical knowledge in developing, implementing and facilitating the early childhood curriculum; and provides the skills to observe evaluate and appraise teacher-effectiveness in providing a creative learning environment and thereafter mentor fellow teachers. The programme enhances and increases candidate’s skills and knowledge as a teacher researched in planning and doing action research; and equips them with administrative and management skills necessary for the efficient operation of early childhood.

The modules are Philosophy of Early Childhood Education, History and Tenets; Human Growth and Development/ The Developing Child (Examination modules); Introduction to Special Needs; Educational Psychology; Overview Course on Observations, Planning, Implementation, Assessment and Evaluation; Understanding and Presenting the Physical Environment; Safety, Health and Nutrition; Positive Guidance Practices and Classroom Management; Partnership with Families and Community; Perceptual, Fine and Gross Motor Skills Development: Children’s Play; Personal Growth and Professional Development in Early Childhood Setting; Language Arts for Young Children; Mathematics for Young Children; Science for Young Children; Art and Craft for Young Children; Art and Craft; Music, Movement and Drama; Current Issues and Research In Pre-school Education In Singapore: Trends and Current Issues; Understanding and Implementing Action research in Early Childhood care and education; Vocational Placement 1 (Teaching - 150hrs); Vocational Placement 2 (Teaching - 150hrs); Vocational Placement 3 (Leadership - 200hrs).
Entry requirement for international students
Applicant should have formal education in English and have obtained a degree where the medium of instruction is English. If the formal education of the applicant is not in English, then they need to obtain a minimum band 6.5 in IELTS - General Training prior to the course.
