Course summary

The M.S. program in Geographical Information Science (GISc) is aimed at individuals who wish to cultivate an understanding of geospatial technologies in mapping and data analysis. Students seeking the MS in GIS will learn how to describe, analyze, and communicate spatial patterns and processes, both in theory and in practice. The focus is on the understanding of GIS fundamentals and the applications of geographic information technologies (GIS, remote sensing, spatial statistics, and database management) to support environmental analysis, resource management, urban and regional planning, and socio-economic analysis. The master’s program will help meet the regional and local demand for technical operators, developers, and managers of geospatial information across a broad range of applications.

Entry requirement for international students

Minimum requirements for admission are a 3.0 grade point average in upper-level (junior and senior year) undergraduate course work or a combined verbal/quantitative GRE score of 1,000 or higher. Students whose native language is not English must complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score oft 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test, and 80 on the Internet-based test. Meeting these minimum criteria is a prerequisite for, but not a guarantee of, admission. Individuals holding degrees in disciplines other than Geography are encouraged to apply but may need to complete prerequisites as judged by the graduate director and their major professor.

Welcome to the Department of Geography at FSU. We are a resourceful and dynamic group of 13 faculty, 1 emeritus professor, 2 staff, 67 graduate students pursuing masters and doctoral programs, and around 160 undergraduate majors in geography and environmental studies.Founded in 1925, the discipline of geography to us means understanding the critical role of spatial reasoning for representing and explaining our rapidly changing world. As such, our research expertise covers three major areas of study.

Florida State University offers several housing options in order to meet the various needs of graduate students. University Housing is committed to providing a comfortable environment that promotes and supports the educational mission of the University.Besides the traditional residence halls available to undergraduate students, FSU has several options for non-traditional undergraduates (23 years of age or older, married, single parent, etc.) and all graduate students. Students may choose from Rogers Hall, Alumni Village or designated spaces in Ragans Hall. Be advised that Rogers and Ragans halls are reserved for single students. Rogers Hall and Alumni Village offer a month-to-month contract, while Ragans Hall only offers a semester contract. Alumni Village offers graduate students a variety of housing options including one and two-bedroom flats and two and three bedroom town houses. Many graduate students relocate with their families; Alumni Village offers comfortable housing for them. Single graduate students can also reside at Alumni Village either alone or with another FSU graduate student roommate of the same gender (selected by the resident).The Florida Clean Air Act, effective as of October 1, 1993, prohibits smoking within any state university system educational facility. Therefore smoking is prohibited in indoor public areas as well as student rooms, apartments and suites.Housing Agreements for graduate students are available after a student has offically been admitted to FSU. To apply for housing, you must do the following: 1) Complete an electronic housing agreement by accessing the on-line application available on the housing website (www.housing.fsu. edu). 2) Return a paper housing agreement with all required information and return it with a non-refundable advance payment of $75, payable to Florida State University.
