Course summary

This program provides a student with a comprehensive technical horticulture education in conjunction with the business world of agriculture. All areas of ornamental horticulture are inseparable from agribusiness. One must be able to analyze production and landscape decisions with a basic understanding of economics, marketing, tax laws, personnel management, and business management. This training will equip a graduate to work with agribusiness firms and ornamental horticulture. This course is not transferable to the four-year agricultural program.

Entry requirement for international students

Applicants must have graduated from an accredited high school with at least a 2.0 GPA minimum grade point requirement will be waived for applicants 21 years and older and transfer students or those who have successfully passed the GED exam. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation and official high school or GED transcripts. SAT or ACT scores are not required. All international applicants must prove English proficiency. Admission will not be granted until English proficiency is met. An applicant may prove English proficiency by one of the following: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 79 on the Internet-based exam or 550 on the paper-based exam; International English Language Testing (IELTS) band score of 6.5; SAT-I Critical Reading score of 450 or higher; English Composition I and II with a grade of C or better from an accredited U.S. college or university; Advanced Placement International English Language (APIEL) score of 3 or higher; English Language Placement Test (ELPT) score of 965 or higher.

The Agricultural Institute (AGI) is part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at NC State. Its primary purpose is to provide students with the practical experience needed to be productive in the many careers within the Agricultural Industry. At the Agricultural Institute students will focus their studies on nine possible majors and hundreds of career opportunities; and they will be armed with a 2-year Associate of Applied Science Degree to hit the gound running.

NC State does not have a requirement for freshmen to live on campus, so deciding where the students will live is a big decision. University Housing has many options that will appeal to students. It offers 20 residence halls and three apartment complexes. The apartments and one residence hall require at least junior status. That means that there are nineteen residence halls for incoming freshmen to choose from. Apartments at NC State are more than buildings; they are living and learning communities. From state of the art data, telephone, and cable TV service, to a variety of floor plan layouts and furnishings, it can supply everything students need. Students can select one from the following Apartment complexes: E.S. King Village; Western Manor; Wolf Village. Residence Halls: From state of the art data, telephone and cable TV service, to a variety of dining options, it can supply everything students need. It has three different layouts to residence halls. Traditional corridor style living has rooms that open into an interior hallway with shared bathroom facilities on each floor. Suite style living combines 4 or 5 rooms on a short hallway that shares bathroom facilities. The breezeway style has rooms that open onto an exterior breezeway with bathrooms in each room. All of these residence halls are air-conditioned. Smoking is not permitted in any residence hall. Some halls are designated as alcohol-free, while in others alcohol is only allowed if both residents are of legal age to consume alcohol. There are severe penalties for any underage resident found with alcohol and for any resident who supplies alcohol to an underage resident.
