Course summary

This program is a theoretical discipline, akin to philosophy, anthropology, and cognitive psychology. It is important for prospective students to understand that studying African Languages is not a matter of learning to speak many languages. The core areas are phonology (with its roots in phonetics), morphology, syntax, and semantics.

Entry requirement for international students

Students must have completed secondary school and have not enrolled in a regular session at any college or university. They must have completed secondary school with a superior average in academic subjects and have earned a certificate of completion which enables the student to be admitted to a university in the home country. Students who have attended school under the British system must present five GCSE/Ordinary-Level examinations and at least three Advanced-Level examinations with superior grades. Results of Advanced-Supplementary or Higher-Level exams should also be submitted. They must have taken scores in ACT assessment plus the new ACT writing test or SAT reasoning test or subject test in English (literature), history/social studies, mathematics (level 2), science and languages (other than English). Applicants whose native language is not in English must have Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 83 or higher on the Internet-based test, 220 or higher on the computer-based test, 550 or higher on the paper-based test and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7 or higher on the academic module is required for admission.

The UCLA Linguistics Department is one of the world's leading centers for the scientific study of language. The expertise of the faculty includes the traditional core areas of phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics, as well as the interdisciplinary fields of psycholinguistics, language acquisition, historical linguistics, and mathematical linguistics. The faculty also include specialists in African and American Indian languages. The UCLA Phonetics Laboratory and the UCLA Psycholinguistics Laboratory are located in the department. About 10 students per year are admitted to the department's highly selective graduate program, which maintains a strong national ranking. The department also offers a rigorous and comprehensive undergraduate major, and teaches the fundamentals of linguistics to a large fraction of the UCLA undergraduates as part of the campus's general education program.

UCLA offer a variety of services to help students with their undergraduate and graduate housing needs. The on-campus housing is situated at the heart of university life and is just a short walk away from classrooms, laboratories, libraries and sports facilities. UCLA’s four high-rise residence halls are co-ed, with separate community restrooms and showers for men and women. Rieber Hall (one of the four high-rise residence halls) is undergoing renovation and does not currently house students. Most rooms in the other three residence halls will be shared by three students while the remaining rooms will have two student occupants. Residence hall amenities include furnished rooms with basic cable TV service and computer network connections in every room, plus laundry facilities on each floor. One building has a learning center and computer lab and all have study lounges. Most buildings have 24-hour front desk services for mail and messages and a residential restaurant on the premises or nearby. Five complexes are located in the Palms-Mar Vista area, approximately five miles from UCLA, and one complex is located in Westwood Village. UCLA Dining Services is nationally recognized for innovative programs, state-of-the-art facilities, high quality food, and a warm and welcoming staff. They cater to students need for convenience and flexibility, providing a variety of menu choices, dining hours, and meal plans. The program is designed to deliver fresh, healthy, and tasty meals.
