Course summary

This is an interdisciplinary and comparative study of the United States as the outcome of migration, labor accumulation, land acquisition, cultural dissemination, the implantation of U.S. laws and policies, and identity formations around gender, sexuality, and race. As an interdisciplinary field, American studies bring the social sciences and humanities together. Students and faculty interact in a variety of academic areas, including literature, history, sociology, anthropology, geography, cultural studies, art history, urban studies, political science, and women’s studies.

Entry requirement for international students

Students to be considered for admission must have completed the coursework through high school graduation. They are expected to complete, at a minimum, the University's core subject requirements such as four years of English with an emphasis on writing, including instruction in reading and speaking skills and in literary understanding and appreciation; three years of mathematics including one year each of elementary algebra, geometry, and intermediate algebra; three years of science including one year each of biological and physical science, and including a laboratory experience; three years of social studies including one year each of U.S. history and geography; two years of a single second language; and one year of visual and/or performing arts including instruction in the history and interpretation of the art form. Individual circumstances are also considered as part of the overall assessment of each application and may factor into individual decisions. Outstanding talent, achievement, or aptitude in a particular area; an exceptionally rigorous academic curriculum; strong commitment to community service and leadership; military service; contribution to the cultural, gender, age, economic, racial, or geographic diversity of the student body; evidence of having overcome social, economic, or physical barriers to educational achievement; first-generation college student; significant responsibility in a family, community, job, or activity; family employment or attendance at the University of Minnesota and extenuating circumstances. Also students who are non-native speakers of English need to demonstrate their English language proficiency with a minimum TOEFL score of 550 in paper based 79 for internet based, 6.5 for IELTS, and 80 for MELAB. If students have taken the ACT exam and scored 17 or lower on the English OR reading section (or SAT critical reading [verbal] score of 420 or lower) need to provide English language scores.

Venue description

The Department of American Studies is one of the most renowned American Studies departments in the country. In its most recent interdisciplinary experiment, the department has trained its skills on evolving within the larger field of American Studies as post-nationalist American Studies. Popularized by the eponymous anthology in the year 2000, proponents of this iteration of American Studies called for a redoubling of the field’s efforts to think beyond the geopolitical and historical parameters of the U.S. nation-state and called for work with a transnational fluency. In the year 2001, the faculty within American Studies decided that we would make post-nationalist American Studies the center of our departmental vision. It institutionalizes that interest in the domains of curricula, graduate recruitment, publishing and hiring. Soon thereafter faculty within the department reshaped the curricula at the graduate and undergraduate levels, redesigned the admissions and hiring priorities, and retailored our scholarly pursuits to boldly engage and direct the field’s new direction.

The University provides housing and living learning opportunities on or near campus. The mission encompasses goals in three areas create individual student living/learning environments, enhance opportunities for commuter student housing and provide housing for students with families, faculty, and visitors. Housing and Residential Life, in coordination with the university police, work to provide a safe and healthy living environment for the student. The University offers eight residential halls and three apartment buildings. The amenities provided in all the residential halls and the apartments are air conditioning, carpeting, dining facilities within hall, card access main entry and resident areas; closet or wardrobe (expanded spaces may have clothes rack), community kitchen, computer lab, dresser, desk and chair (expanded spaces may have tables), Ethernet connection, extra-long twin bed and mattress pad, fee-for-service cable TV, health advocates (student health advisors), ice machines, laundry facilities, local telephone service (phones not provided), lounges, maintenance staff (full time), meeting space, music/piano practice rooms, nightly security monitors, smoke detectors and sprinklers, sports and recreational equipment, games, vacuums, and DVDs available for check out at information desk, study rooms, vending area and window coverings. Yudof Hall apartment, Roy Wilkins Hall and University Village offers different types of room types. University Dining Services has six residential restaurants and offers convenient and flexible meal plans perfect for students, staff or faculty who have a valid university ID. It serves up a changing menu of specialties including pizza, Asian stir-fry, vegetarian selections and American entrees. Each residential restaurant has operating hours and menus based on the needs of their community. A full menu service is offered during the breakfast, lunch/brunch, and dinner meal periods.
