Course summary
This program is an interdisciplinary opportunity that provides the undergraduate with a solid foundation in the methods, topics and issues applicable to the investigation of American society. The major also provides flexibility by enabling undergraduates to pursue a supporting area such as English, history, sociology, social justice, Afro-American studies, women's studies, media studies, and comparative culture studies.
Program modules
The modules include AMST201 Introduction of American Studies 3; AMST340 Introduction to History, Theories and Methods in American Studies 3; One 3-credit course from: 3 AMST203 Popular Culture in America; AMST204 Film and American Culture Studies; AMST205 Material Aspects of American Life; AMST207 Contemporary American Cultures; AMST212 Diversity in American Culture; AMST260 American Culture in the Information Age; Foundation courses outside the AMST department 6.
Entry requirement for international students
Applicants are considered for admission based on the following criteria: academic performance in high school, SAT I and/or ACT scores, class rank (if available), essay, extracurricular activities, school counselor and teacher recommendations, and responses to short answer questions. Maryland residency, special talents and/or abilities, personal experiences and background and Maryland alumni/ae affiliation may also be taken into consideration. As prescribed by the Board of Regents, the university expects all applicants, at a minimum, to have completed by graduation the following course work: four years of English, three years of mathematics, including algebra I or applied math I and II, formal logic or geometry, three years of history or social science, three years of science in at least two different areas, with at least two lab experiences, and two years of a foreign language. A fourth year of mathematics is strongly recommended.
