The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures (NELC) at UCLA is one of the finest all around departments of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures in the United States and is growing. The department has excellent degree programs in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (including Arabic and Islamic, Armenian, Hebrew and Jewish Studies, Iranian, Turkish) and Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations (including Assyriology and Sumerology, Biblical Studies, Egyptology, Near Eastern Archaeology). They offer a comprehensive body of undergraduate and graduate courses. Their students are committed to excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities. They have an outstanding faculty that is collectively dedicated to offering high quality graduate and undergraduate education, ground-breaking research and professional service. UCLA offer a variety of services to help students with their undergraduate and graduate housing needs. The on-campus housing is situated at the heart of university life and is just a short walk away from classrooms, laboratories, libraries and sports facilities. UCLA’s four high-rise residence halls are co-ed, with separate community restrooms and showers for men and women. Rieber Hall (one of the four high-rise residence halls) is undergoing renovation and does not currently house students. Most rooms in the other three residence halls will be shared by three students while the remaining rooms will have two student occupants. Residence hall amenities include furnished rooms with basic cable TV service and computer network connections in every room, plus laundry facilities on each floor. One building has a learning center and computer lab and all have study lounges. Most buildings have 24-hour front desk services for mail and messages and a residential restaurant on the premises or nearby. Five complexes are located in the Palms-Mar Vista area, approximately five miles from UCLA, and one complex is located in Westwood Village. UCLA Dining Services is nationally recognized for innovative programs, state-of-the-art facilities, high quality food, and a warm and welcoming staff. They cater to students need for convenience and flexibility, providing a variety of menu choices, dining hours, and meal plans. The program is designed to deliver fresh, healthy, and tasty meals.
