Course summary

The program will provide students with a general historical background of the black experience in Africa and the Western hemisphere, as well as provide detailed examination of cross-cultural and multi-ethnic dynamics in the contemporary social-political context. In addition, this program is designed to enhance the student’s ability to function in current job markets that serve multi-cultural and multi-ethnic populations, particularly where the black experience is crucial.

Courses are: BST 202 Introduction to Black Studies; BST 396 Research Methods and Theory in Black Studies; BST 407 Senior Seminar; BST 409 Practicum; one course from BST 203 Introduction to African American History; BST 204 Introduction to African American History; BST 206 Introduction to Caribbean Studies or BST 211 Introduction to African Studies; BST 207 Introduction to Race, Class and Gender; BST 214 Introduction to Contemporary Race and Ethnic Relation; BST 221 Introduction to African American Literature; four courses from BST 302 African American Experience in the 20th Century; BST 342 Black Feminism/Womanism; BST 351 African American Literature; BST 352 African American Literature; BST 410 Psychological Development of African American Children; BST 411 African American History Seminar; BST 412 Oregon African American History; BST 413 Slavery; BST 414 Racism.

Entry requirement for international students

Applicant must have completed high school or secondary school with a cumulative (overall) grade point average (G.P.A.) of at least 3.0 (when converted to the U.S. 4.0 grading scale). They are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores; however, a low GPA can be offset by an SAT score of 1000 or ACT score of 21. Applicants may demonstrate English language proficiency by submitting the following test results: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores for Paper-based test (PBT) 525, Computer-based test (CBT) 197, or Internet-based test (IBT) with minimum sub scores of 16 for reading and listening, and 14 for speaking and writing or IELTS scores of 6.5 overall and minimum 6.0 in each band.
