Program modules
The Chinese Major consists of 34 upper-division credit hours listed in the Chinese section of the General Catalog, including Comp Lit 2010, of which at least 15 must be taken at the University of Utah. Required Courses: 1. Comp Lit 2010: World Literature and Culture. 2. One of the following: CHIN 3010: Third-year Mandarin Chinese (for students with the equivalent of the first four semesters of undergraduate Chinese 1010-2020); or CHIN 3060: Introduction to Written Chinese (for students with extensive background and proficiency in the Chinese language). Such students may not take any Chinese course listed below 3060 except for 3020. 3. CHIN 3020: Third-year Mandarin Language. 4. CHIN 4550: Patterns of Traditional Chinese Culture. 5. Two Chinese Literature courses: CHIN 4610; CHIN 4620. 6. CHIN 4710: Classical or Literary Chinese. 7. CHIN 5280: Structure of Chinese: Syntax (cross-listed as LING 5280) OR Chinese 5281: Phonetics. 8. CHIN 4990: Capstone course. 9. Additional upper-division elective hours (necessary to complete the 34 credit hours) including 3000 or 4000 level Chinese courses or graduate-level Chinese courses (5000+ level) with instructor approval. Elective Courses: CHIN 3390 Chinese Calligraphy; CHIN 3410 Teaching Chinese as a Second Language; CHIN 3420 Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Practicum; CHIN 3510 Business Chinese; CHIN 3950 Service Learning; CHIN 4560 Problems of Modernizing China; CHIN 4720 Classical or Literary Chinese; CHIN 4880 Directed Reading; CHIN 4900 Special Topics.
Entry requirement for international students
Applicants for Admission to the Freshman class are required to have graduated or expected to graduate from an accredited high school before entering the University. Applicants are required to submit ACT scores. SAT scores are also accepted, although ACT scores are preferred. Students are urged to take the ACT/SAT near the end of their junior year or early in the senior year of high school. Students not able to take the ACT on a national date may take the Residual ACT through the University of Utah Testing Center. In addition, a minimum TOEFL score of 500 (173 on the computer-based exam or 61 on new iBT exam) is required. International applicants graduating from secondary schools outside the U.S. must have completed all requirements for graduation with satisfactory grades and must have received a diploma or certificate of graduation. In addition, applicants must be eligible for admission to a major University in the country in which they graduated. Applicants may be considered for admission if they have a minimum TOEFL score of 450 (133 on the computer-based exam or 45 on new iBT exam ) and are academically qualified.
