Course summary
Art history is an ideal curriculum for students who wish to investigate a broad range of humanistic disciplines. The visual arts are studied in their historical context in terms of the cultural, economic, philosophical, political, religious, social and technological conditions that determine content and form. The department also emphasizes critical thinking, writing and visual analysis of individual works of art. The art history program provides both majors and non-majors with a thorough introduction to the visual arts of both Western and non-Western cultures throughout history.
Program modules
The modules include AH 100 Introduction to Western Art I, AH 101 Introduction to Western Art II, AH 104 Introduction to Arts of Asia and the Islamic World,AH 301 Japanese Art, AH304 Chinese Art, AH305 African Art, AH308 Native American Art, AH309 Pre-Columbian Art.
Entry requirement for international students
Candidates for admission to undergraduate degree programs should have completed high school-level college preparatory work or otherwise demonstrate sufficient academic preparation to begin college work. Normally, high school courses should include, as a minimum, four years of English, three years of mathematics, three years of natural sciences, three years of social sciences and two years of a foreign language. Consideration for admission is based upon an applicant’s academic background, including high school academic achievement, educational goals and potential for success at Oakland University. Students applying as freshmen must submit scores from the American College Test (ACT). Students should have a TOEFL score of 550 minimum on paper-based, 213 minimum on computer-based and 79 minimum on internet-based. The minimum MELAB score of 77 is required.
