Course summary

The program seeks to enhance student learning through supervised clinical experiences in the areas of prevention, recognition, assessment, management and rehabilitation of injuries to the physically active individual. In addition, the program seeks to impart knowledge, skills and problem solving abilities in the areas of organization and administration of athletic training programs as well as education and counseling of the physically active individual. The professional faculty and staff consider their scholarly practice and research essential components of effective teaching and learning by the students. The program seeks to insure quality education by adhering to the standards and guidelines set forth by the profession.

Program modules

Requirements for a Major in Athletic Training for the B.A. Degree: 75 hours. ATR 210, 211, 300, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306, 307, 445, 448, 449, 450 and 490; BIO 201; HEA 201, 465; PED 216, 217, 266, 340, and 349; PSY 105. To satisfy the applied learning requirement for the B.A. degree in athletic training a student must successfully complete one or more of the following: ATR 306, 307, 448, 449, or 490.

Entry requirement for international students

Students should have a graduation from an accredited secondary school. They must meet minimum course requirements as established by the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina system. The course requirements should include the following: four course units in English, two course units in foreign language, four course units of mathematics, three course units in science and two course units in social science. A minimum 2.5 GPA on a U.S. scale of 4.0 is required. English proficiency is required of international applicants and is proven by one of the following: minimum score TOEFL should be 71 on the Internet-based exam, 197 on the computer-based exam, or 525 on the paper-based exam; minimum score of IELTS is 6.5 on the academic module; SAT-I Critical Reading score of 450 or higher; ACT reading section score of 20 or higher; Successful completion of UNCW’s ESL program, prior to applying; Having lived in the U.S. for 4 years or more and completion of 2 college-level courses of English composition at a U.S. college or university with a grade of B or better.
