Course summary
This program allows the students to develop the knowledge of all aspects of design including scenic, costume, lighting and sound as well as gain the skill sets to create and realize their work. They will be given the opportunity to collaborate on productions with the assistance of the faculty. The curriculum will begin with an overview that explores the broader scope of theatre design and production. Upper level courses will allow the students to focus on their area of expertise. The capstone experience will require the student to apply their knowledge by realizing a design or production project under the supervision of the faculty.
Program modules
In addition to the core requirements, the student must complete: THR 241, 242, 243, 487 and 495 (1 credit); 2 of the following courses: THR 305, 306, 308 or 310; 3 of the following courses: THR 201, 202, 207, 208, 211, 395 or 485; and 6 additional hours of theatre courses at the 200-400 level. Recommended electives are THR 205, 309, 312, 355 and 411.
Entry requirement for international students
Students should have a graduation from an accredited secondary school. They must meet minimum course requirements as established by the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina system. The course requirements should include the following: four course units in English, two course units in foreign language, four course units of mathematics, three course units in science and two course units in social science. A minimum 2.5 GPA on a U.S. scale of 4.0 is required. English proficiency is required of international applicants and is proven by one of the following: minimum score TOEFL should be 71 on the Internet-based exam, 197 on the computer-based exam, or 525 on the paper-based exam; minimum score of IELTS is 6.5 on the academic module; SAT-I Critical Reading score of 450 or higher; ACT reading section score of 20 or higher; Successful completion of UNCW’s ESL program, prior to applying; Having lived in the U.S. for 4 years or more and completion of 2 college-level courses of English composition at a U.S. college or university with a grade of B or better.
