With 45 full-time faculty, more than 500 undergraduate majors, and 200 graduate students, English is one of the largest and most vibrant departments at GSU. We are proud of the breadth and excellence of our programs, which range from the two-semester Freshman Composition sequence to Ph.D. programs in literary studies, creative writing, and rhetoric and composition. We emphasize teaching, research, and service to students and the community. All faculty teach lower-division as well as advanced courses, and in recent years a large number of English Department faculty members have won teaching awards from the Honors Program, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the University. Faculty research and creative writing have been recognized by major awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Commission and the Guggenheim Foundation. Both undergraduate and graduate students have opportunities to participate in international exchange programs, faculty research, service learning and internships, and to gain editorial experience through one of the many publications the Department sponsors: Five Points (our award-winning literary journal), the South Atlantic Review, Studies in the Literary Imagination, the on-line Journal of Advanced Composition, the GSU Review, and The Eudora Welty Newsletter. Our location in the heart of downtown Atlanta and our diverse student population allow us to take advantage of both the historical and cultural richness of the region and the resources of its fastest-growing and most international urban center.

University Housing offers a variety of choices from which student may select. University Commons: Brand-new for Fall 2007, the University Commons is a 4.2-acre complex of four apartment buildings ranging from 8 to 15 stories surrounding a large landscaped courtyard. University Commons will house 2,000 students in contemporary two and four bedroom furnished apartments. The Lofts contains fully furnished loft-style apartments that blend an urban style with modern-day conveniences. Housing approximately 450 residents and conveniently located adjacent to campus. The Lofts is home to the Undergraduate Scholars Program, undergraduate students 21 and older, graduate students, and students with families.
