Course summary
This program embodies the significant cornerstones of studio practice: visual literacy, aesthetic understanding, and technical skills. The curriculum offers a broad range of materials, techniques, and processes in its representational and non-representational approaches to art making. Disciplines inherent in the Painting concentration include Drawing and Printmaking. Foundation-level courses focus on a greater understanding of pictorial principles and design through still life, landscape, interior and invented motifs. Observational analysis, spatial relationships, and compositional strategies are emphasized in the progressive stages of the curriculum. Intermediate life drawing courses focus on the human model and the representation of form and structure in a composed space. Advanced courses concentrate on the exploration of ideas and images to develop and encourage personal expression.
Program modules
The courses are:ART 100: Introduction to Art or ART 101: Survey of Western Art, Four art history courses above the 100 level, ART 120: Fundamentals of Drawing, ART 140: Design I, ART 150: Clay Modeling, ART 220: Intermediate Drawing ART 221: Life Drawing I, ART 321: Life Drawing II, ART 498 and ART 499: Independent Study to be taken in the senior year. Courses required by the painting concentration: ART 232: Painting I, ART 335: Painting II,ART 337: Painting.
Entry requirement for international students
Students must complete the equivalent of a U.S. academic high school diploma. They should have TOEFL Paper-Based score of 550, Computer Based score of 213, or Internet Based score of 79 or 6.5 overall score for IELTS or SAT verbal 400.
