Course summary

The Environmental Studies concentration combines the core geography degree with an interdisciplinary social science and physical science focus in the environment. In the expanded (60 credit) curriculum, geography is combined with other earth sciences, chemistry or biology, and economics or legal studies.

Entry requirement for international students

Montclair State University considers a number of factors during the admission process. In preparation for the academic rigor of Montclair State University, students should have followed a challenging high school curriculum. As a Freshman Applicant, students are required to have completed the following high school courses with satisfactory grades: 4 units of English, 3 units of math (in the Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II sequence), 2 units of the same foreign language, 2 units of lab sciences, 2 units of social sciences 3 units of academic electives (which may include additional units of math, languages, sciences or social sciences.) Strong candidates for admission generally meet the following criteria: A GPA of 3.0 or greater in the required curriculum, A combined SAT score of 1425 (Math, Critical Reading, and Writing) or ACT composite score of 20.

Venue description

In the department Environmental Modeling Laboratory is designed to enable faculty and student researchers to develop and use mathematical and chemodynamic models and computer simulations for the assessment of impacts of anthropogenic stressors on environmental and ecological systems. The EML is equipped with high-end computer capacity and related peripherals. Inductively Coupled Plasma optical/Atomic Emission Spectroscopy, The ICP lab is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The lab is located in 200 Finley Hall. The lab is used for major course works, student research and faculty research. Dr. Gorring said there has been increased enthusiasm for learning and research since the instrument arrived. Geographic Information Systems Computer Laboratory, Computing resources are becoming an important part in both undergraduate and graduate courses. Formal teaching covers basic information technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing and Groundwater Modeling. These activities are supported by various hardware and software which include PC computers, Sun Workstations, digitizers, scanners, and plotters. The ENVI, Noesys, Arc Info 8.0, Arc View 3.2, Idrisi32, Fellow, and GMS are widely available.
