Course summary
This program establishes and maintains mutually beneficial relationships between an organization and the publics on whom its success or failure depends. Public Relations is a profession deeply involved with developing written materials (news releases, newsletters, brochures, etc.) to be used for an organization’s various publics. It also involves understanding and working with the news media to both promote and protect the client; analyzing and interpreting public opinion; counseling management on policy decisions; researching planning and implementing programs; plus managing the people and resources needed to carry out the PR function.

The modules are Comm 101 Fundamentals of Public Speaking (2 cr), JAMM 100 Media and Society (3 cr), JAMM 121 Media Writing (3 cr), JAMM 341 Mass Media Ethics (3 cr), JAMM 448 Law of Mass Media (3 cr), Two of the following concept courses: JAMM 340 Cultural Diversity and the Media (3 cr), JAMM 377 Documentary (3 cr), JAMM 378 American Television Genres (3 cr), JAMM 379 Hollywood Portrayals of Journalists (3 cr), JAMM 440 Critical Issues in Mass Media (3 cr), JAMM 443 Media Management and Economics (3 cr), JAMM 444 Mass Media and Public Opinion (3 cr), JAMM 445 History of Mass Media (3 cr), JAMM 465 Political Advertising (3 cr), JAMM 490 Global Media (3 cr), Plus 9 elective JAMM credits (3 credits of 300- or 400-level classes).Required course work includes the university requirements, the School of JAMM core, plus the following: JAMM 225 Reporting, JAMM 252 Principles of Public Relations (3 cr), JAMM 350 Public Relations Writing and Production (3 cr), JAMM 452 Public Relations Campaign Design (3 cr), JAMM 458 Public Relations Case Studies and Issues Management (3 cr).
Entry requirement for international students
Students who have no previous work at the post-secondary level must have at least a 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) from a secondary school. Students must also meet the criteria for admission to university level study in their home country. Students must have any one of the following as proof of English competency - TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 525 on the paper test or 70 on the internet based test; completion of the University of Idaho American Language and Culture Program (ALCP); SAT critical reading with a minimum score of 500; IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 6.0; Cambridge CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) with a pass; Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) with a pass; Cambridge International 'O' Levels with a pass; MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) with a score of 74. English proficiency demonstration is waived for any applicant who has a previous degree at an accredited U.S. institution or who have taken English classes at U.S. institutions and passed those classes or students from countries where English is the native language and/or the official language for academic instruction.
