Course summary
This program is a unique track intended for individuals who will be working in a complex multi-cultural setting. This track is suitable not only for those going on to graduate studies in Sociology, Anthropology or Geography, but also people moving directly into the work setting either with cross-cultural interaction or working in other cultures. This degree program provides a background for those who would pursue specialized careers in human services, health services, planning, international relations, and education, that require a knowledge of cultural diversity. This program is especially applicable to careers in the Pacific-Asia region. It is excellent preparation for graduate studies.
Program modules
The Fall year 1 courses include COM 101 Intro to Communication; CUH 100 First Year Experience; EN 101 Intro to Expository Writing; MA 103 College Algebra; CS 103 Computers and Applications. The Spring year 1 courses include AN 200 Cultural Anthropology; EN 102 Expository Writing; History - any 100 or 200 level History course; Natural Science course including lab; Philosophy - PH 100, 103, or 105; Religion - RE 103, 205, or 211. The Fall year 2 courses include English Literature - EN 201, 255, or 256; Global Awareness/FL course; SO 200 Introduction to Sociology; Social Science course (GE 102 or 103 rec.). The Spring year 2 courses include Fine Arts course; Foreign Language II (rec) or free elective; Interdisciplinary course; Regional Histories; Free elective. The Fall year 3 courses include Cross Cultural Exp; AN/SO 302 Theory in Behavioral Sciences; Religion - any 300 level Religion course; Social Issues. The Spring year 3 courses include 300-400 level Elective course outside the major; SO 317 Social Research Methods and Evaluation. The Fall year 4 courses include AN/SO 494 Senior Thesis Research; SO 327 Career Development. The Spring year 4 courses include AN/SO 498 Senior Thesis; Free elective (300-400 level). The social issues courses include nine credits of SO 305, 308, 401, 407, 412. The cross cultural experience courses include nine credits of AN 340, 350, 357, 360, GE/ID 335, SO 331. The regional histories courses include six credits of HI/POL 343, 444, 442, 443, 444, 452, 453, RE 365 or RE 478.
Entry requirement for international students
Applicants should have earned a high school diploma or the equivalent. Adequate preparation typically includes English (four years), social studies (three years), mathematics (three years), science (two years) and college preparatory electives (four years). For unconditional admission they must have obtained a minimum of GPA 2.5, SAT 900 (critical reading and math) or ACT 19, or a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 21(computer-based) or 79-80 (internet based).
