Course summary

The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, in cooperation with the College of Engineering, offers a four-year curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science in Biosystems Engineering. The curriculum is accredited by the Engineering Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Career opportunities for graduates include the design, development, or management of practices that produce biofuels, minimize soil erosion and conserve water resources; biological waste treatment systems; safer machinery systems with lower environmental impact; and improved food and bio-processing systems. Employment opportunities are available in a wide variety of industries, government agencies, research and testing organizations, and educational and non-profit institutions. The curriculum provides instruction in the analytical and design skills needed to solve engineering problems related to biological and agricultural systems.

Entry requirement for international students

Applicants must have completed of the 14 required core academic subjects: 4 units of English; 3 units of mathematics (2 units of algebra plus 1 of advanced math, trigonometry, geometry, or calculus); 2 units of natural science (including at least 1 unit of biology, chemistry, or physics); 2 units of a single foreign language; 1 unit of American history; 1 unit of European history, world history, or world geography; 1 unit of visual or performing arts. All undergraduate applicants who are not U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency in one of the following ways: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam. A minimum score of 193 (computer-based), 523 (paper-based), or 70 on the iBT TOEFL (internet-based) or a minimum score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam or a minimum score of 21 on the English portion of the ACT or a score of 510 on the Critical Reading portion of the SAT or college credit (grade C or better) for English Composition 101 and 102 or AP credit (score of 4 or 5) on the Literature and Composition test or completion of the ELS Language Centers 112 intensive program or completion of the UT Knoxville English Language Institute’s (ELI) core intensive curriculum with recommendation from the ELI faculty.
