Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology train graduate and undergraduate students with research interests in ecology, evolutionary biology, animal behavior, conservation biology, behavioral and population genetics, plant biology, computational, mathematical and theoretical ecology, evolutionary theory, plant systematic, and other areas of organismal biology. The department strengths in these areas are complemented by collaborations with many other departments at UTK as well as the wide variety of scientists outside the university. Its adjunct faculty is found in the UTK departments of Biochemistry and Cell and Molecular Biology, Comparative Medicine, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries, Geography, Mathematics, Microbiology, Nutrition, Plant and Soil Sciences, and Psychology. It also have adjunct faculty who work at the Environmental Sciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the US Geological Service, and the US National Park Service. It also encourages collaborations within the department and beyond.

The University of Tennessee is a residential campus with 13 residence halls accommodating nearly 6,500 students. Living on campus allows students to be a part of a wide range of residence hall activities designed to contribute to a fantastic first-year experience—and greatly increases their probability of satisfaction with university life. The Department of University Housing provides apartment living for married students, single parents, single graduate students and non-traditional undergraduates 21 years and older. The University of Tennessee is a dry campus. In accordance with University regulations, serving, consuming, possession, being under influence or the display of an alcoholic beverage is not permitted. All residence hall rooms are wired for computers and there is no charge for service. The University offers three housing options for students. This allows students to select the type of facility in which he or she will live, within the University's capability to offer such living arrangements. Students are encouraged to give considerable thought and attention to their housing selection. The differentiated housing program offers three distinct types of living atmospheres.
