Course summary
This program is a nationally accredited program where students earn an elementary education (Delaware K-6) teaching certificate and a second teaching certificate in one of the five following areas: middle school English, middle school math, middle school science, middle school social studies, and special education (Delaware K-12). The coursework in the ETE program enables students to learn the content knowledge, how to teach this content, and the pedagogical skills to be an effective classroom teacher, and it can be divided into three areas. The General Studies area includes courses in the following subject areas: natural sciences, mathematics, social sciences, English/linguistics, and fine arts. The Professional Studies area is designed to develop the candidate's teaching skills. The courses place strong emphasis on the development of teachers who can plan and implement appropriate educational experiences for children of varying levels of ability. The Second Certification area provides the teacher candidate with an opportunity to select one of the following areas for a middle school licensure: English, general science, mathematics, or social studies. The candidate can also choose special education instead of a middle school area.
