Department of Food Science at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences of Rutgers University.It is a student-oriented program that emphasizes fundamental principles of food biology, food chemistry, and food processing to prepare graduates to be leaders in development of new, wholesome, nutritious, and safe food products. Since the curriculum is grounded in basic science, graduates are able to pursue careers in a wide variety of professional and technical fields. The undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree includes options in Food Science Research, General Food Science, and Food Science and Management Economics. A joint Culinology program with Mercer County Community College combines culinary arts with food science. The graduate program leading to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees provides a solid background in food science while allowing for specialization in the areas of food biology, chemistry, or engineering.

The university provides both on-campus and off-campus housing. In off-campus rooms are usually unfurnished singles (rooms for one person) or doubles (rooms for two people), and a great number are within walking distance of a campus. The common areas of the unit-as well as the household responsibilities-are usually shared by all tenants. Rooms in Private Homes are rooms in owner-occupied apartments or houses. They are usually furnished and generally include partial or all utility charges in the monthly rent. Rooms in private homes do not always include kitchen privileges, and few are available within walking distance of a campus. Most are in surrounding municipalities. In on-campus housing student residence halls provide the following equipment and facilities. In the rooms: A bed, desk, chair, dresser, and closet for each student, window coverings (drapes or blinds), and smoke detector. In the buildings (most residences have these facilities in the building): Laundry. Lounge (many with TV). Study area. Kitchen or kitchenette (many with microwaves). Food and beverage vending machines.
